In New York City, Casi is 26 years old and has been out of law school for three years. He is a public defender and as he says in the narration of the first scene, there aren't enough people doing his job, and people who need help aren't getting enough of it.Twelve days before the collapse, Casi's first defendant in the movie is Ah-Chut, who does not speak English. There is no translator available. Getting him out of jail means appearing before the strict Judge Cymberline. He is not successful.Craig goes to the Tow Pound, telling Lea he is there to get a friend's car out. She can't help him. He offers her a lot of money and then flirts, but ultimately he is not successful. The car is a Lincoln Navigator which will be auctioned.The power goes out in much of the city. Casi needs a place to stay and visits Angus, who believes in conspiracy theories and has complicated equations on his blackboard. In a later visit, Angus explains the concept of a singularity in a black hole.Lea gets out of bed to find Craig using her computer. She throws him out.Ten days before the collapse, Casi hears two assistant DAs laughing about a Chinese prisoner. He demands to know more but they just laugh and get on the elevator. Casi meets with his friend Dane, another public defender who says Lea wants him to handle her case.Lea meets with Casi and explains what Craig wants and says she already has a record. In a flashback, she is shown at her job going to the car Craig wants and finding the drugs that are hidden there. Lea and Casi meet in a different location with Detectives Winston and Coburn who agree to let Lea help with the case.Casi has another defendant who has gotten clean. Normally, this would be good, but if he is clean, the defendant has a better chance of doing prison time. As a joke, Casi suggests the best thing for the man might be to go to Cuba. But when the man and Casi appear before Judge Cymberline, she is not pleased that she is seeing an outdated report on the man's medical status. The defendant ends up disappearing and Judge Cymberline finds out what Casi said. She tells him he could have ended his career by giving the man the advice he did.Casi and Dane have one scene where they are fighting martial arts style and also talking about Casi's situation.Lea has several meetings with Craig, who wants to pay her a lot of money because if he gets the drugs, he will able to get millions for them. At their second meeting, he brings a very large man and forces her into a 1970 LTD, driving her to a location where someone's body is in a freezer.Five days before the collapse, Lea has another meeting with Casi at a restaurant and explains her situation. She is tired of a job that she doesn't like but her past means that she can't do any better--legally. Casi feels pretty much the same way.Casi's boss tells him he will get six months' suspension if he is lucky and disbarred if he is not. The room appears to get smaller and Casi is floating. At night, Casi and Dane are dressed up in a bar and discussing how they can benefit from the car being auctioned.Four days before the collapse, Casi has the day off and is not dressed up. He gets a cell phone call from Winston saying Casi is now responsible for Lea and if she messes up, it is his fault. Winston says she is no longer working for the cops. Casi happens to run into Lea and they both end up on the subway when the power goes out. After dark, they go to her apartment and kiss, finally ending up in bed. While there, Casi tells Lea about his abusive mother who was deported to Colombia.Casi leaves and Craig literally bumps into him, taking his wallet. Then Craig, with his goon beside them, threatens Casi if he interferes with what they are trying to do.When the power comes back on, both of Casi's defendants from earlier are shown screaming in separate jail cells.On the day of the collapse, Casi and Dane have a plan. Lea will help them. Casi brings a sword that has been a decoration in this apartment, and Dane brings tear gas. Dane rents a car and gets Lea to retrieve it for him, but the process is more complicated than usual, giving Casi the opportunity to sneak in before the auction and switch tracking devices. At the auction, Craig bids on the Navigator but is outbid by a man with an accent who is actually involved with the drugs, and the process becomes more difficult.Nevertheless, Detectives Winston and Coburn are able to pull over and arrest the man who outbid Craig. Lea, Craig and the goon take a separate car, and Casi and Dane go to a building where numerous men who appear to be Hasidic Jews are doing something that appears illegal. Casi and Dane are also dressed as Hasidic Jews. The men with Jewish clothes and beards pay for the drugs and then Dane sets off the tear gas. He and Casi steal the money, while the cops end up getting the drugs.But Craig won't let Lea go, and as he is beating her up, Dane and Casi come in and save the day.The audience sees what is essentially a TV from the early days being turned off.Casi, Dane and Lea are standing next to the water. Each one has part of the money, and Dane and Lea leave in separate cars. Casi throws his sword into the water.Casi appears before Judge Cymberline intending to sue because of the way cops treated his client. He has a law firm now, though he is the only lawyer. And while the judge requires bail for the client, somehow that is not a problem.

The film opens with to young criminal lovers Mickey (Bill Skarsgard) and Jules (Maika Monroe) robbing a gas station. Mickey can't get the register open since he caused the cashier to faint. Jules hands him a snack to buy so they can open the register and make off with the money...and the snack.The two are heading to Florida to get away from the police and their worthless lives. Jules gets excited and tries to have fun with Mickey on the road, but their car quickly runs out of gas, and the irony of having just robbed a gas station hits them. They decide to walk until they can find another solution to keep moving. They leave the car stranded until they come across a nice house. They start to break in until Mickey sees that the front door is dead-bolted shut. Jules hands him a crowbar and they break in.Mickey and Jules start to make themselves comfortable as they try to figure out their next move. They snort cocaine, which gives Mickey the idea to siphon gas from the homeowners' car and carry it with them to their car. They run to the basement to look for a hose, but they end up discovering a little girl (Blake Baumgartner) chained to the floor. Jules wants to help her, but Mickey thinks it's a bad idea. He relents and decides to help get the girl out.The two run back up to the kitchen and are found by the homeowners, a seemingly friendly couple named George (Jeffrey Donovan) and Gloria (Kyra Sedgwick). Mickey aims his gun at them, but George calmly attempts to diffuse the situation once he realizes they are trying to break the girl (whom the couple calls "Sweetiepie") out. George suggests that Mickey and Jules take what they want and get out of there so that the police aren't involved, but Mickey makes it clear they are not leaving without the girl. The couple relents and brings the crooks back down to the basement. George unchains Sweetiepie, but when Mickey tries to take her with him, she bites his wrist, and George headbutts Mickey to knock him out.Mickey wakes up tied to a bed. Gloria attempts to seduce him, though she creeps him out by playing up a mommy fetish. She also shows him pictures of her supposed son that she calls "Ethan." Meanwhile, Jules is stuck in the basement tied to the support beam. She tried talking to Sweetiepie, but she remains unresponsive. This goes on for about two days. Jules admits to the girl that her parents abandoned her when she was a child. Mickey appears to give into Gloria's seduction, but when he asks to touch her, she uncuffs him and gives him an opportunity to throw her off of him. Mickey makes a run for the door but is stopped by George with his gun. He forces Mickey to go to the basement and stay tied up with Jules.Mickey and Jules plan their escape. He remembers her tongue stud and tried to convince her to take it out so that he can use it to pick the locks. Jules is hesitant since she knows it will hurt, but with Mickey's help, they are able to pull it out. He manages to uncuff Jules, but when she tries to get his cuffs, the stud breaks inside. Thinking quickly, Jules runs for it to try and find another way to help Mickey. George comes down and sees that Jules is gone, and he threatens to cut Mickey's ear off to get him to talk. He quickly says that Jules went somewhere to meet Mickey, and if he isn't there at a certain time, the cops will come. George believes him and uncuffs him to take him outside.As they head for the front door with Mickey at gunpoint, Jules emerges with "Ethan", who is just a porcelain doll that Gloria has a deep attachment to. Jules threatens to drop Ethan unless George lets Mickey go. Gloria instead grabs George's gun and shoots at Jules, but she missed and causes her to drop Ethan, and his head shatters. Gloria tearfully tries to piece the doll back together. George keeps Mickey and Jules hostage.George and Gloria strap Mickey and Jules to chairs as they are seated for dinner, with Gloria preparing a shepherd's pie. Mickey and Jules eat the food and ask what the whole deal with Sweetiepie is. George explains that she was kidnapped by them since Gloria is barren and couldn't have have kids. However, she couldn't see Sweetiepie as her own child, so she ordered George to get rid of her. He views her being captive in the basement as a form of mercy. Mickey and Jules then start to feel dizzy, and George reveals that they were just fed an excess amount of pills to knock them out before George plans to overdose them with heroin and make it look like they are just two junkies who broke in and went on a bender before dying.The plan is interrupted when a cop comes to the door, as Mickey and Jules's car was found abandoned near the scene of the gas station robbery. George assures the cop that everything is fine, but he becomes suspicious when he sees the broken door. George reluctantly lets the cop inside. Gloria has stashed Mickey and Jules away in their gym to keep them hidden from the cops. The officer then goes down to the basement. George prepares to shoot him before he discovers Sweetiepie, but he is called back outside by the other officers.Jules manages to wake up and get cocaine for herself and Mickey to get them back on their feet. They trick George and Gloria into thinking they ran away, and they emerge after the older couple heads out to find them. While walking in the woods, Gloria says she has had enough of George insulting her out of frustrations, and she admits she would rather forget about Mickey and Jules and just carry on with their lives by going on a trip. Meanwhile, Mickey and Jules prepare to take George and Gloria's car, but they end up agreeing to free Sweetiepie. She only goes after Mickey apologizes for yelling at her after she bit him.The young couple makes it to the garage but can't find the garage door remote. George and Gloria have returned home to find that their keys are gone, and so is Sweetiepie. George heads the garage door opening, and he makes it to the front before Mickey and Jules can get away. He holds his gun at them and orders them to step out of the car. Mickey tells Jules he loves her right before he hits the gas and runs George over. Unfortunately, Mickey has been shot in the chest. He has a brief final moment with Jules before he dies. Jules cries over Mickey's body before a now horribly disfigured George pulls her out and tries to strangle her. He is stopped when Sweetiepie steps out the car and grabs his gun. He tried to sweet-talk her into giving him the gun, but she instead shoots him in the head. Gloria comes outside with luggage for a trip before she sees George's corpse. She is now fully delusional and tries to "wake" George, and Jules cannot being herself to kill Gloria. Sweetiepie finally talks and says she will go with Jules. The girls walk until they are picked up by a kind woman, and she takes them to Florida.The last scene is a home movie style video of Jules and Sweetiepie (now actually looking like a cheerful child) enjoying a day at the beach in Florida, with them also having a small knick-knacks shop named after Mickey.

In the small town of Salem, MA, several people in town are wearing a bunch of weird masks. We hear the voice of high school senior Lily Coulson (Odessa Young) saying how the people in her town lost their minds. She then takes us to the beginning of her story.Lily was a regular student always hanging out with her best friends - Bex (Hari Nef), Em (Abra), and Sarah (Suki Waterhouse). The girls talk about how Bex's crush, Diamond (Danny Ramirez), has been texting her. The girls later go to a party that night where Bex hooks up with Diamond while Lily goes to be alone with her boyfriend Mark (Bill Skarsgard). After sex, Diamond leaves Bex alone, and she starts to cry. Meanwhile, Lily is texting someone named "Daddy" behind Mark's back.The next day, a hack occurs in which Mayor Bartlett (Cullen Moss), a known anti-gay candidate, is exposed for engaging with male escorts and dressing up in women's clothing. The scandal becomes so distressing for Bartlett, that he goes before a conference of people, pulls out a gun, and shoots himself in the mouth. Bex claims she doesn't feel bad for Bartlett due to his personal history of hypocrisy.At school, Lily gets called in by Principal Turrell (Colman Domingo) for drawing nude women in pornographic poses. Lily argues that it is meant to be empowering, while Turrell assures Lily he sees her potential.Soon, Turrell's phone gets hacked, and pictures of his underage daughter are shown, making people think that Turrell is a pedophile. He goes before a conference of people who believe he is going to formally resign, but he tries to defend his position and state that he cares for the children, so he will not resign, and the crowd boos him.More people start to get hacked. It's revealed that cheerleader Reagan (Bella Thorne) spread nude pictures of her friend Grace (Maude Apatow) to a guy she liked. Grace takes an aluminum bat and whacks Reagan over the head with it during cheer-leading practice, leading to Grace getting arrested.Quickly, more than half the town's personal pictures and information are leaked. "Daddy" is revealed to be Lily's neighbor Nick Mathers (Joel McHale), whose kids Lily babysat. Lily's pictures and videos that she sent to Nick are revealed. Mark finds out and has his friends hold Lily down so he can expose her for being a whore by taking a picture of a birthmark on her back that was seen in the videos, while Lily's parents kick her out of the house when they find out what she did.Lily is walking down the street in shame when a few guys drive by her to film and mock her. One of them pulls out a knife, so Lily runs through the backyard of someone else's home. The guy chases her around the back trying to film her, but Lily takes him out by whacking him across the face with a shovel.Pretty soon, most of the men in town go insane when their secrets are exposed. They find a kid, Marty (Noah Galvin), whom they believe to be behind the hacks. After waterboarding him, they get Marty to say who is really behind the hacks. In a live video, Marty claims that he noticed a lot of activity coming from Lily's computer, labeling her as the mastermind. The men in the video stab Marty to death, and Lily and her friends see the video, knowing they are in trouble.Masked men break into Em's home and go after the girls. Em's mom Nance (Anika Noni Rose) gets her own gun and kills some of the men, but one of the men in turn kills Nance. Em and Sarah are taken outside and held hostage by a corrupt cop and other psychos. Bex tries to escape Em's house, but she's cornered by a masked goon with a nail gun. They fight in the pool until Bex gets the nail gun and kills the guy. However, Bex is found and caught by Diamond, his friend Johnny (Cody Christian), and other goons.Lily runs to Nick's house for safety. Although he comforts her at first, his intentions become sinister when he tries to rape Lily. She appears to go along with it, but then bites him in the face and hides in his bathroom where he finds what appear to be the mutilated corpses of Nick's wife and daughter, whom he killed after his life was ruined. Lily finds some razor blades and embeds them into a bar of soap. Nick breaks through the door and attacks Lily, but she slashes his throat. Lily then finds Nick's large cache of weapons and goes to save her friends.Lily finds the cop taking Em and Sarah, and she confronts him. Lily blasts him with a shotgun and frees her friends. They go to find Bex, who is about to be hanged after Johnny found out that Diamond had relations with her, and is repulsed because Bex is transgender. Bex pleads with Diamond not to let this happen. He undoes the noose around her neck, but Johnny shoves Diamond and puts it back on, having one of his guys drive a truck that she is standing on to let her drop. The girls show up with their weapons and start blowing heads off and cut down Bex. After killing all the other guys, Bex prepares to kill Johnny, but he pathetically pleads for his life, and she spares him. They also untie Diamond and let him go free.Lily then makes a video calling out to the other girls in the neighborhood to stand up and fight back against the psychos. All the girls listen, and they join Lily and her friends as they come up against an army of masked goons.Sometime later, Mr. and Mrs. Coulson are speaking to a detective regarding one of their kids being behind the hack and that they are looking at a life sentence. The true perpetrator turns out to be Donny (Caden Swain), Lily's brother. When his father asks why he did it, Donny responds, "For the lulz."
