Soviet soldier turned bureaucrat Igor Gouzenko is assigned to his first overseas posting in 1943 to Ottawa, Canada, as a cipher clerk for the military attaché, their offices in a secret wing of the Soviet embassy. Igor is not to tell anyone what he does for a living, he given a cover story which he is to recite even when questioned by his own people. He and his wife Anna Gouzenko are supposed to be cordial to their Canadian neighbors and associates, but not fraternize or befriend them, as they are still considered the enemy, despite both countries being on the same side in the war. Igor follows his instructions to a T, but it is more difficult for Anna, who does not have the distraction of work during the day, and who can see that their neighbors are not their enemies but good people much like themselves. Over the next few years, Igor sees that what is happening around him and the work in which he is involved will not result in a world in which he wants to raise his newborn son, Andrezj. As such, the Gouzenkos decide not to return to the Soviet Union. Besides defecting, Igor wants to expose what he is privy to, namely that there is a secret Soviet spy ring operating in Canada, which is comprised of people in authority, such as Canadian military personnel and elected officials. The spy ring's biggest project is to provide the Soviet government with secrets concerning the atomic bomb. Igor being able to get the necessary papers out of the embassy will be difficult enough, especially as he, Anna and Andrezj have been notified that the posting has concluded and that they are scheduled to return to the Soviet Union, but proving his claim to someone in authority in Canada who will listen before the Soviets discover what he is doing is a whole different matter.—Huggo

Alan Eaton is a Korean War veteran and ex-POW who returns to the USA after his release from captivity. Back in Washington, DC he tries to re-adjust to civilian life by returning to work. He co-owns a public relations-opinion research firm together with his business partner Clark Baker. However, he is shocked to learn that Clark Baker died in a hit-and-run accident the previous year. Also, Clark Baker, who had power-of-attorney during Alan's absence, had sold the firm to one of the employees, Jim McGinnis. Alan explains to Jim McGinnis that Clark Baker only had power of attorney to run the business, not to sell it without Alan's consent. McGinnis implies that Alan was duly informed ahead of time via letters sent to him while he was a POW in Korea. Feigning compassion, McGinnis offers Alan a job because their clients respect and trust the Eaton name. Alan Eaton asks for time to consider the offer. He then visits his old friend, Senator Walder, who voices his suspicions regarding the illegal manipulation of polls by the new owner of the firm, Jim McGinnis. The Senator encourages Alan Eaton to accept the job with McGinnis' firm and investigate any irregularity. In the course of his investigation, Alan, with the help of sympathetic young secretary, Lorraine Dennis, uncovers the whole illegal affair. He discovers that Jim McGinnis falsifies the statistics and poll data in order to make or break various candidates to public office. In his efforts, McGinnis, who makes big bucks out of this, is aided by a network of subversives. However, Alan and Lorraine know that uncovering facts is one thing and proving them is another thing. They must gather evidence and go to the authorities, even if this means risking their lives.—nufs68

New York after World War 2 is challenging for Manhattan commercial artist Daisy Kenyon (Joan Crawford) who is still struggling to establish her career, difficult for her now that she's hit 40, but also because she is single and sustaining a long-term adulterous relationship with married lawyer Dan O'Mara (Dana Andrews) who takes Daisy and his own wife Lucille (Ruth Warrick) and his success for granted. When Daisy begins seeing emotionally damaged, ex-soldier Peter Lapham (Henry Fonda) she feels it's only casual but when Peter, so different from boyfriend O'Mara, shows sincere interest in marriage Daisy can only consider the opportunity seriously. Daisy marries Peter out of real affection but still longs for Dan, partly because the lawyer has shown a sensitive side by taking a pro bono case to help a Japanese American try to get back his land that was taken away as a result of the reactions to the Japanese involvement in World War 2. Dan comes to Daisy and declares his love for her, him but Lucille learns of their relationship and sues Dan for a divorce. As the three are dragged through litigation Dan proposes that he and Peter and Daisy together decide what is important to them and find a resolution to the mess their lives have become.

Dr. Rupert Norberg (Dana Andrews), a leading medical researcher for the Nazis, has been secretly at work in England for 20 years, learning how to reanimate a flash frozen Nazi force. He has been supported in this work with funds to cover the "castle" in which he works as well as care for his niece, Jean (Anna Palk), whose father is one of the dozen "stiffs" in his locker. He can restore the physical bodies of the soldiers but has yet to get their brains reactivated. His assistant, Carl Essen (Alan Tilvern), prematurely tells a former general (Karel Stepanek) that their goal is in sight. The general's appearance forces the assistant to push things further. Knowing that Norberg needs to study a live brain, Essen kills Elsa Tenney (Kathleen Breck), the girlfriend that Jean, has brought home for the school holidays. Then he prompts Norberg to keep the head alive for study. At the same time, Dr. Ted Roberts (Philip Gilbert) arrives from the U.S. to assist Norberg in his research. His own work has been able to keep a dog's head alive in the laboratory. Elsa's head starts sending premonitions out that Jean picks up on. Although originally sworn to secrecy, Ted falls in love with Jean and switches his allegiance to help Jean stay alive and get to Elsa.

While on a business trip just before Christmas, Tom Phillips gets into a car accident, which was caused by the reckless driving of the other car involved. Although Tom suffered no paralysis from his back injury, he did come out of the accident with a chronic back problem which results in him not being able to continue with his current work, and a mental block having anything to do with the accident, including Christmas music, driving in general and the sounds of screeching tires and breaking glass. The Phillips - Tom, his wife Peg, and their two children, teenager Tina and pre-teen Jamie - end up moving from their Boston home and buying a motel in Mayville in the California desert. Tom would be physically able to do the work required running a motel, and the dry heat is good for his back. But as they approach Mayville, they encounter a bunch of reckless hot rodders named Duke, Ernie and Gloria. Since Tom scolds them about their reckless behavior, they decide to make the Phillips' lives miserable by terrorizing them using their souped up vehicle. They also end up finding out where the Phillips' ultimate destination is. But as their string of altercations comes to a head, the process which includes Tina's teen-aged infatuation with Duke, the Phillips have to figure out how best to protect themselves, Tom who knows they can't outrun the souped up hot rod, or out "chicken" the crazed Duke. —Huggo
