After inventing an anti-gravity device called the Contragrav, scientist Thomas Edmunds and his daughter, Mary, attend the National Air Races in Cleveland, Ohio in search of a pilot to demonstrate the device and Bob Raymond, from the U.S. Border Patrol, is chosen. Unbeknownst to Edmunds and Mary, Mortimor Crome, who is the owner of the International Import and Export Company and a friend of Mary's, is actually the leader of a gang of smuggler's and is after Edmund's invention. During the demonstration at the air meet, Bob Raymond narrowly escapes death after his aircraft is sabotaged by Mortimer Crome and one of his cronies. This leads to Raymond being all-in and coming to Edmunds aid in foiling Crome's plans and ultimately defeating him, using another of Edmund's inventions, which was a superplane, called the Phantom.

Boyd Emerson has spent two unsuccessful years in Alaska trying to make his fortune in the gold trade, mostly in an effort to impress his socialite girlfriend Mildred Wayland's father, Wayne Wayland, although Mildred does not care if Boyd is wealthy or not in wanting to marry him regardless. Boyd has literally and figuratively hit the end of the Alaska trail when he meets Cherry Malotte, who convinces him to join her and her associate George Balt in another business, silver, more specifically the burgeoning salmon fishery and cannery. Cherry is up front to him that it is a dangerous business in that Fred Marsh has set up a syndicate to control the salmon fishery in Alaska, he going to the extreme of killing to achieve his goal. As Boyd uses Cherry's connections to try and secure financing to build a cannery while Balt's men operate the fishing side of the business, several issues complicate matters. First, Marsh is Wayne Wayland's preference as a husband for Mildred. Second, Cherry herself has fallen in love with Boyd, something she doesn't want to let him know. And third, Cherry has not informed Boyd why she is so well off and has all her business connections, which was through her former work as a prostitute.—Huggo

Adaptation of the Broadway musical. Magnolia Hawks is the lovely but protected, and thus very naive, daughter of Cap'n Andy Hawks, the genial proprietor of a show boat that cruises the Missisippi, and his nagging wife, Parthy. She is best friends with the show boat's star, Julie LaVerne, but Julie and her husband Steve are forced to leave when it is revealed that Julie has "Negro" blood in her, thereby breaking the state law by being married to the white Steve. Magnolia replaces Julie as the show boat's female star, and the show's new male star is the suave gambler Gaylord Ravenal. "Nola" and Gaylord fall in love and marry against Parthy's wishes. They and their young daughter lead the high life when Gaylord is lucky in gambling, but live like dirt when he's unlucky. During one such unlucky streak, a broken Gaylord leaves Nola, and she is forced to start over by returning to the stage.
