An impoverished violinist falls for a beautiful gypsy girl. Together they meet an artist who paints the girl's portrait. Charlie, the violinist, believes the girl loves the painter. Later, when a wealthy woman recognizes her long-ago- kidnapped daughter in the painting, she tracks down the girl with the artist's help. The gypsy girl is taken back to her rightful heritage, leaving Charlie thinking she has gone off with the artist he thinks she loves. But has she? Does she?—Jim Beaver

In the Oskaspeil Café Chaplin continually shows his disregard for the head chef by throwing him down and knocking him about unmercifully. Chaplin manages to get himself involved in a dozen difficult situations from which he extricates himself with his usual ingenuity. At one moment he appears to be cornered by an indignant husband with whose wife he has been conducting a flagrant flirtation, but the next instant the indignant hubby is hors du combat. Then there is always Edna to be looked out for. Charlie's sweetheart resents, as always, his flirtatious attitude toward her sex in general and pursues him like a faithful but indignant fiancée, mollified as usual after the offender has been brought to book by his magnetic smile and bland, childlike surrender to her demands. Edan's flirtation with "old man" Campbell, a giddy old chap of the skating rialto, is countered by Chaplin with an affair involving Campbell's wife, which in the long run gets him mobbed. Probably the best comedy in the play is that presented in Chaplin's efforts as a waiter. His progress between the tables with a tray is one long succession of disasters in which soup invades the decolletage of feminine diners and full dress shirts become vivid futurist fantasies done to tomato sauce and mustard pickles. Everybody knows that Chaplin's feet are the funniest facts about Chaplin. Well, Charlie's feet with roller-skates on them are funnier feet than ever. The skates Chaplin has to wear in order to make them fit his exaggerated shoes, have to be at least eight sizes too big for Charlie, but that doesn't make a bit of difference to so expert a skater as he.—Moving Picture World synopsis

The Rink (1916)

Charlot is an alcoholic and gets a suitcase full of alcohol in a sanatorium. The director discovers alcohol, which makes throwing out but ending up in water, which has strange effects: patients dance in the sanatorium until they stagger. The following day he reveals to Charlot that the water is full of alcohol and Charlot falls into the pool.—luigicavaliere

The Cure

The Cure (1917)

Charlie has escaped from Sing-Sing. He burrows up through sand on the beach and is chased by several guards. Nearby Edna's mother is drowning and her 'strong man' beau is afraid to rescue her. Charlie rescues Edna, then (unwillingly) her mother, and is then nearly drowned by her suitor. Found by the family chauffeur, Charlie is brought to Edna's house to recover. There he romps through drinks, encounters with Edna and her friend, and the law.—Ed Stephan

The Adventurer

The Adventurer (1917)

When Charlie the Tramp wanders into a mission, he is smitten by Edna and puts back the collection box which he has taken. Reformed, he becomes a policeman and is assigned to rough-and-tumble Easy Street. Unable to trick or beat Eric the Tough, he puts Eric's head in a gas pipe and anesthetizes him. A hero, he now helps many poor people living on Easy Street. Eric escapes jail, Edna is kidnapped, but Charlie (recharged after sitting on a doper's needle) conquers all. Easy Street is transformed as is Eric.—Ed Stephan
