"Top Gun: Maverick" was the biggest hit of 2022, but audiences were largely unaware that a behind-the-scenes contract with Paramount gave the military the right to "weave in key talking points," edit the script, and screen the film before its release. This was not the first time, of course. Internal documents from the Pentagon's Entertainment Media Office praised its work with "Top Gun" (1986) as having "rehabilitated the military's image, which had been savaged by the Vietnam War." Naturally, the upper echelons of the military see Hollywood as a PR opportunity, but questions arise: How deep does this PR campaign go? How many films? What's the extent of script doctoring?Roger Stahl, a professor of communication at the University of Georgia, has studied the "military-entertainment complex" for a decade. He's aware that the military housed an office for doing business with Hollywood and TV, but the scholarly consensus was that it was a small-time operation that perhaps influenced a couple hundred films. Then he learns of two British researchers, Matthew Alford (University of Bath) and Tom Secker (freelance journalist), who obtained tens of thousands of pages of internal U.S. Defense Department and CIA documents through Freedom of Information Act requests. The documents confirm that the security state has exercised direct editorial control over at least 1,000 feature films and another 1,000 television shows.The DealProducers who want access to military hardware, personnel, and installations must visit the Pentagon offices in Los Angeles whose "entertainment liaison" in turn asks to review the entire script. Typically, producers receive several pages of line-by-line script change requests. If the producer makes the changes, they sign a contract, get the military goods to use as set pieces, and begin production with military oversight. If the military is unsatisfied with the script changes, or the producer refuses to make them, then there is no deal, and the producer walks away with what amounts to a competitive disadvantage in the movie business. This influence has a "chilling effect" on screenwriters even before their scripts land on the Pentagon's desk. The CIA has modeled their entertainment office off the military's. Professor Tricia Jenkins (author of The CIA in Hollywood) notes, however, that the CIA has found success by involving itself in preproduction and story conceptualization.Shot DownThe Pentagon's ability to deny assistance to a film or show is a powerful weapon. It began issuing more denials after Vietnam based on objections to forbidden themes the military internally calls "showstoppers." Such denials make productions more difficult and expensive. "Thirteen Days" (2000), for example, had to go to the Philippines to obtain equipment. A denial sometimes means a film is never made. Paramount Studios required producers to get military approval or it would not green light "The Hunt for Red October" (1990). Thereafter, virtually every Jack Ryan film (and the TV series) had Pentagon and CIA help. Films denied by the Pentagon often are never made. "Countermeasures" was to be a big-budget Touchstone film about weapons smuggling on an aircraft carrier. Although Sigourney Weaver had agreed to play the lead role, the Pentagon objected that "there is no need to denigrate the White House or remind the public of the Iran-Contra Affair." The film was never produced. A database maintained by the Pentagon Entertainment Media Office confirms that dozens of films have suffered this fate. Publicly, the Pentagon publicly says that it denies films that are "inaccurate," which is disingenuous. Internal documents show they were aware of authenticity and accuracy problems with "Top Gun," but they supported it nonetheless because it had PR value. At the same time, they have often denied films written or produced by veterans who experienced events firsthand. These include "Jarhead" (2005) and "Fields of Fire" from the late 90s, which was never produced. "Fields of Fire" is particularly dramatic as it was based on a book by Vietnam vet James Webb (former Secretary of the Navy) that is still required reading for Marine officers. It was rejected because it referenced drug abuse and war crimes. Army veteran Oliver Stone's films "Platoon" (1986) and "Born on the Fourth of July" (1989) were denied for similar reasons. In an interview, Stahl hands Stone his rejection letter for "Platoon." Stone talks about why the military's objections were self-serving and did not reflect concern for accuracy.How We KnowUntil recently, scholars assumed DOD and CIA influence was limited. The only major book on the subject was Guts and Glory by historian Lawrence Suid, which was remarkably uncritical of these practices. The DOD had apparently given him exclusive access to internal documents, which he kept in a private and inaccessible archive at Georgetown University. This provoked speculation about Suid's objectivity. In 2004, investigative reporter David Robb wrote Operation Hollywood, which used available documentation to argue that the entertainment office was engaging in propaganda. Suid attacked the book. Robb's work inspired researchers Matthew Alford and Tom Secker, however, who began making FOIA requests. They confirmed the DOD and CIA had worked on over 2,000 film and TV scripts. If individual TV episodes are counted, the number is over 10,000. Tricia Jenkins says that the CIA files are harder to crack. Meanwhile, Suid's death meant that his large archive of official DOD documents was opened to the public. In it, Stahl discovers evidence of a cozy relationship with the Pentagon, which may explain why his book was so favorable to the Pentagon's benign narrative.Projecting the InstitutionWhen it comes to the Pentagon office's interests, the most obvious is recruiting, which runs deeper than one might think. Beyond "Top Gun," the Navy turned a series of recruiting ads into the feature film, "Act of Valor" (2012), and the Air Force staged a massive "Captain Marvel" (2019) campaign to recruit young women. The CIA used "Alias" (2001-06) and Jennifer Garner to project a recruiting message and actually wrote the first draft of "The Recruit" (2003) starring Al Pacino and Colin Farrell. The Pentagon office is also interested in minimizing certain controversies like veteran suicide and racism in the ranks, which they remove from scripts. A big issue is sexual assault, which they have sought to replace (through perennially supported shows like "Army Wives" and "NCIS") with a story of how the victim refuses to talk but the military is so eager to find justice that they pursue the case anyway. This official storyline is at odds with the realities that victims report.The Soft SellOne of the main interests of the Pentagon is product-placing weapons systems in venues from History and Discovery Channel specials to feature films like the Iron Man and Transformers franchises. This is especially important for controversial systems like the F-35, which has been shoehorned into numerous productions. "Iron Man" (2008) is particularly dramatic. In the original script, Tony Stark goes to battle against the arms manufacturers, including his own father. After the film went through the DOD mill, however, the original script disappeared, Tony Stark inherited his father's business, and he became an arms dealer himself. This plot inversion allowed for the integration and celebration of military hardware. Apart from selling weapons, the Pentagon has endeavored to make the military the heroes of the story. They denied "Independence Day" (1996) because the aliens overwhelm the military and blow up the Pentagon (a scene that disappears from the final cut). Films like "Black Hawk Down" (2001) were an opportunity to take a military disaster and rewrite it as a triumphant rescue story. "Argo" (2012) functioned similarly for the CIA. The film's storyline, which the CIA had been pushing in Hollywood for years, de-emphasized the most unflattering aspects of the most embarrassing episode in CIA history and focused instead on the comparatively minor success of this single operation.On the RoadThe National Geographic Channel miniseries "The Long Road Home" (2017) was an Army-supported project filmed entirely at Fort Hood. It tells the story of an ambush on American soldiers outside of Baghdad in 2004, another military embarrassment. And like "Black Hawk Down" (2001), it turns the story of tragedy and mismanagement into a heroic rescue. Two veterans who were wounded in the ambush talk of how the show twisted the facts. First, "The Long Road Home" denigrated one character, Tomas Young, who later went on to be a prominent anti-war activist. Second, the show lionized the Battalion Commander responsible for the debacle and who, coincidentally, served as Chief of Army Public Affairs during the show's production. The veterans conclude that the changes in the show were part of a PR campaign. "That's not creative license," one says. "That's a cover-up."Skeletons in the ClosetThe CIA and Pentagon have scrubbed references to war crimes and other unsavory episodes from scripts. The CIA once rejected any mention of torture but after 9/11 began spinning it as necessary in shows like "24" (2002-14) and "Zero Dark Thirty" (2012). The Pentagon has removed mention of war crimes from a number of films, including "Lone Survivor" (2013). During a Navy-sponsored webinar, Stahl poses the question of why this was done the former Chief Information Officer, who defends the change even though it contradicted actual events. The Pentagon has also pushed to normalize the U.S. overthrow of foreign governments in supported films like "Iron Man" (2008, Afghanistan) and "The Suicide Squad" (2021, Latin America). The Amazon Prime series "Jack Ryan" (2018-19), supported both by the DOD and CIA, justified a U.S. intervention into Venezuelan politics at a time when the CIA was actually trying to stoke an insurrection to overturn a Venezuelan election. The Pentagon would also like viewers to forget about the dangers of American WMD's. They have removed references to Agent Orange and rejected films that insist on its portrayal. The same goes for any critique of nuclear weapons policy or the suggestion that keeping a large arsenal may itself pose a threat. In the case of "Godzilla" (2014), they removed speech about the horrors of Hiroshima and helped turn the franchise from a critique of nuclear proliferation into a celebration of the Bomb.Mission CreepThis is not just about war movies. Especially in the wake of recent unpopular wars, military PR has taken refuge in other genres like sci-fi and particularly reality TV - from game shows to home renovation to those that embed the viewer in overseas occupations. Recent Chief of Entertainment Media, David Evans, talks about "Inside Combat Rescue" (2013-16) as a particular success story for military PR. The military has also become more proactive through outreach and actively soliciting projects. Even though the office publicly denies pitching story ideas, the documents are rife with such activity. Evans' LinkedIn account plainly states that the office routinely intervenes the "concept and script development" stage.The Big PictureMilitary intervention in the entertainment industry is an important issue because of the degree of military intervention in other countries. The U.S. has a military larger than the next dozen countries combined and has been on a continuous bombing run since World War II. This kind of PR activity bolsters public support for these actions, creating another "cinematic universe," which has had enormous costs in terms of money spent and civilians killed. The question arises: What can we do about this propaganda effort? Part of the answer is legal. Because the DOD and CIA have blocked efforts at transparency, scholars suggest legal means for making this documentation accessible. And because the U.S. has laws against propagandizing to domestic populations, legislation could shut these operations down, automatically make documents public, or at least mandate disclosure of Pentagon and CIA support at the opening of a film or TV show. Such actions would arm audiences with critical tools "in a world" where the security state occupies so much cultural territory.

Called "Prok" as an adult (short for Professor Kinsey), Alfred Kinsey, Jr. (Liam Neeson) has been interested in biology since he was a child growing up in the early twentieth century, despite the criticisms of such being evil nonsense from his overbearing and devoutly Christian father, Professor Alfred Seguine Kinsey (John Lithgow). Prok goes on to become a biology professor at Indiana University, initially focusing on the study of gall wasps. But those studies, in combination with questions from his students, coming to terms with the needs of sex with his own wife, a former student of his named Clara McMillen (Laura Linney) (whom he calls Mac), and what he sees as the gross misinformation on the subject currently within popular belief makes him change his focus to human sexuality. Many of those gross untruths - as he sees them - are that oral sex and masturbation cause a slew of maladies, which are perpetuated by what is presented in the university's hygiene class taught by Professor Thurman Rice (Tim Curry). With the approval of faculty head Herman Wells (Oliver Platt), Prok starts teaching his own wildly popular marriage course, talking about sex in a straightforwardly academic fashion. When he sees that morals don't necessarily mirror sexual behavior, he decides to conduct a massive sex survey with the assistance of students Wardell Pomeroy (Chris O'Donnell), Clyde Martin (Peter Sarsgaard), and Paul Gebhard (Timothy Hutton). He faces the issue of the funding required for the survey and public and political response to this controversial, and oft seen as taboo, subject. But in conducting the survey, he and Mac also face the issue of their own sexuality in relationship to their marriage, and the emotional and cultural aspects behind it, such as the notion of love.—Huggo

In the futuristic city of Grainland, a girl named Mai Su (Charlyne Yi) is living an ideal life with her parents, until an argument between them ends with her father leaving the family. Over the next several years, her mother Molly (Constance Wu) copes with the separation by buying several highly advanced robots called Q-Bots, unintentionally leaving Mai feeling neglected and alone. This leads to Mai rejecting all robots and making her an outcast among her peers, as robots soon replace everything, from police to teachers.Years later, Mai is now an adolescent teenager and Molly is almost completely oblivious to how her daughter feels. She and Molly head out to the launch event for the Gen 6 Q-Bots. Mai, disinterested in the whole ordeal, decides to leave the line on an escalator and destroys a robot that was pestering her. After being cornered by security Q-Bots, she decides to escape to a nearby chute for the smaller robots, entering in Dr. Tanner Rice's (David Cross) secret lab where he has developed a robot of his own: Project 7723 (John Krasinski). After being annoyed by his assistant Q-Bot Alfredo, Dr. Rice leaves the lab in which Mai decides to investigate. While inspecting 7723, she accidentally activates him. Mai eventually gets caught by a security Q-bot and brought back to the launch, leaving her backpack behind.During the launch, IQ Robotics' charismatic CEO Justin Pin (Jason Sudeikis) introduces the newest model of Q-Bots, "Gen 6." After offering free Gen 6 models to everyone that showed up to the presentation, Justin and his enormous, intimidating robot, Ares head down to the manufacturing factory and meet with Dr. Rice, who shows reluctance to releasing the Gen 6 Q-Bots. Alfredo then privately reveals to Rice that 7723 has left the secret lab and Rice panics.7723 eventually escapes the building to locate Mai and return her backpack to her. A security bot tries to stop him, and he slices the bot in half in response. Now on the highway, 7723 is confronted by various security bots trying to stop him but are unable to capture him due to his advanced weapon systems. The security bots then fire missiles at the bridge, causing the bridge to break and send 7723 falling into the lower parts of Grainland. Waking up several hours later, 7723 discovers that he has damaged his core memory functions, resulting in him having only enough storage for three days' worth of memory.Back in school, Mai is playing soccer by herself until she hits another girl named Ani (Anna Akana), who happens to be sitting nearby. They are then confronted by Greenwood (Kiana Lede), a bully who insults Mai about her dead father. Upset, Mai kicks her soccer ball right into Greenwood's face. Greenwood then orders her and her friends Q-Bots to attack her. Mai returns from school, upset, and Molly attempts to cheer her up but fails to recognize that robots don't help with Mai's problems. Mai then heads to her room while Molly attempts to find companionship with her Q-Bot.7723 then arrives at Mai's house, he returns the backpack, but Mai is still irritated with him. After being attacked by her robotic toothbrush, 7723 fires a laser at the toothbrush. Fascinated by 7723's hidden weaponry, Mai allows 7723 to stay in her garage. It is then revealed that in order to further delay the event of him from losing his memories and shutting down, he must delete excess memories in order to create space. Meanwhile at IQ, Justin confronts Dr. Rice about 7723. He tells him to not to worry about fixing an error with the Gen 6 that has them explode when close to a human.Mai then returns to the soccer field with 7723 by her side to get revenge against Greenwood for the following day. Greenwood sends one of the robots to attack Mai, but 7723 easily destroys it. Mai, extremely interested in 7723's abilities, takes him along for misadventures which mostly involve destroying robots and the two bonding. 7723 struggles with choosing which of these memories to keep and forget.During a talk show, Justin is addressed with 7723's actions on the highway, who bears his company's logo. He passes it off as a knockoff robot that was found and deactivated shortly after, until he is shown new events which involve Mai and 7723's misadventures and destruction of Q-Bots, to which he claims that the robot is not his.After another day of mischief, Mai and 7723 return home in which 7723's program reveals that he only has 18 hours of memory storage left. He reveals to Mai that he cannot exceed 100% of memory storage or else he will shut down and reboot completely. Dr. Rice is then threatened by Justin after the incidents with 7723. He is then tasked with finding him. Rice reveals that he can see what is happening through every active Q-Bot's eyes in hopes of finding 7723. 7723 then tells Mai he wants to play baseball instead of their usual routine. Mai exclaims that what they do is justice for how robots have negatively impacted her life. Dr. Rice then proceeds to look through the Q-bot footage, which reveals that 7723 does not enjoy the mischief that Mai is making him do.
The next day at school, Greenwood continues to bully Ani, in which Mai takes 7723 again to once again get her revenge. 7723 is now reluctant to commit mischief. After trapping Greenwood, Mai orders 7723 to hurt Greenwood with his energy cannon, which he refuses to do. Just as Mai was ready to hit Greenwood in the head with the bat, Greenwood starts crying and Mai realizes what she is doing is wrong and is no better than Greenwood. Later into the night, when choosing which memories to delete, 7723 decides to delete his weapon control system until he has to reset.7723 finds out that Mai has run away from home. He eventually finds her by a hill and has made a colorful light that creates a picture of Mai's family to project on the night sky. When Mai reminisces over the happy life she had before her father left her home, the two forgive each other and continue to watch. Mai then returns home to find Dr. Rice waiting for her. He inspects 7723 and reveals he can fix his memory storage, but this will delete all of his existing memories. Before he can do that, Justin arrives with Ares to take Dr. Rice away. Rice tries to appeal to Justin's sense of humanity and their long past friendship but is ignored. Justin then reveals his plans to kill the entire human race. He then orders Ares to attack and 7723 then proceeds to fight without his weapons while Mai tries to attack Justin who displays some robotic mannerisms. While trying to escape Mai's mother is kidnapped by Justin. The duo then escapes into the sewers, which Mai is enraged by 7723 deleting his weapons function and allowing her mother to be kidnapped. Mai then leaves 7723 behind, crying.At the IQ headquarters, Mai has infiltrated the building, determined to save her mother. She is then reunited with 7723, still angry about previous events. As they fight security bots side by side, the two reconcile and head onto Dr. Rice's lab. There he reveals that her mother is bait in a trap for them and tries to fix 7723. He is suddenly interrupted by Ares and Justin, who kills Rice by vaporizing him. While listening to Justin talk, Mai quickly discovers something is off about him as his movements begin to mimic Ares's. Eventually, Ares then explains that he killed the real Justin after he created him and has been using his Cybernetically altered body as a puppet. Ares reveals he plans to make the world perfect by exterminating the human race, ending all conflicts in the process. 7723, Ares, and "Justin" fall through a window, landing in a crowded soccer field where they all have a drawn-out fight.Mai successfully reconciles with her mother, and Ares unknowingly confesses everything on camera with a whole stadium of people watching. Mai manages to tell the public the Q-Bots are bombs and knock out Justin's eye, to which he openly confesses everything. He attempts to kill Mai until her mother beats him up. Back on the field, 7723 tries to stop Ares, but to no avail. Mai begins helping the people evacuate the stadium, saving Greenwood from her exploding Q-Bot. Mai ends up taken hostage by Justin on the roof of the stadium to taunt 7723 while he fights Ares.However, Greenwood returns to help free Mai and she and Justin fall off the building. 7723 initiates his system reboot to reacquire his weapons and saves Mai from falling. As he's fighting, he's slowly losing all the memories he shared with Mai. After defeating Ares in orbit, the two robots crash into the surface and 7723 prepares to finish off the former, who is now heavily dilapidated. However, his reboot finishes before he can fire, and he shuts down. Mai arrives to find 7723 mostly intact but inactive, but Justin arrives having survived the fall and attempts to kill 7723, but Mai manages to decapitate Ares, destroying them both. 7723 soon reactivates but has none of his past memories of Mai whom he loved and greets Mai the same way he did the first time they met.Sometime later, Mai is shown to be hanging out with Greenwood, Ani, and her friends, along with 7723. The movie ends with all of them creating new memories and playing soccer together while 7723 begins to remember some of his old ones, including the fact that he and Mai would always look out for each other.

Smiley Face follows Jane, a regular pothead and aspiring actress. Her normal day consists of 'waking and baking', eating chips, and sleeping on her wonderful bed. The movie starts off with her talking to herself on the top of a still Ferris wheel. Then it goes back to 9 am that same day, when Jane is smoking weed and playing on the computer. She goes to the fridge to get something to eat and finds her roommate's batch of delicious cupcakes that he's saving for this SciFi Party later on. Of course, she eats all of them, only to realize they were also baked with pot. So, incredibly high, Jane makes a list of things to do, including buy more pot to make her roommate more cupcakes, go to her acting audition, and pay the power bill in person before the company cuts off their electricity. That is how Jane's day begins... but it goes on well into sunset, where you will find Jane back on the Ferris wheel, with the original Communist manifesto by Karl Marx in her arms and several angry people below her, ready to send her to prison.
