Pilot John Dooley and his crew of four are flying an Air Force mission in a Douglas C-47 Skytrain (the military version of the DC-3). They experience icy conditions in the uncharted wilderness near the Quebec-Labrador border. Dooley is a former airline pilot who had been pressed into duty hauling war supplies across the northern route to England. Unable to make radio contact for bearings, they land on a frozen lake far from settled country and can only provide an approximate position to rescuers. Compass readings were unstable in this region. Dooley must keep his men alive while waiting for rescue in the extreme winter cold with temperatures plummeting to -70 degrees Fahrenheit and limited food. At headquarters, Col. Fuller gathers fellow airmen, close colleagues of Dooley, who are determined to find the downed crew before the men succumb to hunger and the cold. The search pilots experience frustration and fear when their initial attempts are unsuccessful. From the sketchy data they have, it seems Dooley went down on the far side of a range of mountains that doesn't even appear on their maps. In the face of an approaching storm, they are unsure as to what their final attempt should be. A wrong decision will doom the missing crew. The downed crew are able to use a hand-cranked generator to send a weak signal that will hopefully be picked up.—Garon Smith

Their paths cross again when Pat wants Mike brought in as seaman Richie Cole is on his deathbed in suffering from a gunshot wound, the gun used being the same one in the unsolved case of murdered Senator Leo Knapp. Despite Mike not knowing who Richie is, Richie states that he will talk only to Mike about the shooting. Why Richie wants to talk to Mike is that he, truly an undercover federal agent, states, just before he passes, that Velda, still alive, is involved in the proceedings, her life now in danger. The thought of Velda still being alive brings Mike back into the land of the living. This case brings two other significant people into his sphere: Federal Agent Arthur Rickerby, who wants revenge for whoever killed Richie; and Laura Knapp, the senator's seductive widow, who may shed some light into her husband's murder. As Mike has to find the connection between the senator, Richie and Velda, he may place his own life and that of Laura in danger, which is only made more complicated as he starts to fall for Laura, as she, in the here and now, places a slight crimp in his feelings for a still absent Velda.—Huggo

"Jigger' Pine forms a band that includes singer Ginger 'Character' Powell, wife of the trumpeter Leo Powell, and Nickie Haroyen and Peppi. All of them dedicate themselves to work as a unit and to play blues music. The dedication isn't paying off financially and, while riding the rails in a boxcar, they meet and befriend gangster Del Davis. He offers them a job at a New Jersey roadhouse, where Powell falls in love with Kay Grant, a former 'real good friend' of Davis. But when Powell learns that Character is about to have a baby, he returns to her. Jigger tries to make Kay the band's singer and, after this fails, runs off with her. She leaves him with nothing but a nervous breakdown. Back at the roadhouse, after his recovery, Kay shows up, has a quarrel with Davis, shoots and kills him, and plans to take back up with Jigger, who knows better but just can't help himself. While she is waiting in a car for him, along comes cripple Brad Ames, who she put in that condition, and he gets in and drives the car over a cliff, leaving no survivors in the two-passenger crash. The band is back together at the end, still using boxcars as their transportation, but happy playing the blues.—Les Adams

As their offspring grow from teenagers to adults, the offspring learn that there is much hypocrisy by the adults lying underneath that façade of proper Christian morals. She joins Connors and Simms on the train and Ricki and Ace start falling for each other. Feletti wants the bonds and keeps an eye on Ricki to make sure she doesn't double-cross him.
