In 1921 Dublin, the I.R.A. battles the "Black & Tans", special British forces given to harsh measures. In 1930 Belgium, Gabrielle van der Mal, stubborn daughter of prominent surgeon Dr. Hubert van der Mal, decides to leave her upper-class family to enter a convent, expecting to work as nun in the Congo with tropical diseases. She says good-bye to her sisters Louise and Marie, her brother Pierre, and her beloved father and subjects herself to the stringent rules of the retrograde institution, including interior silence and excessive humility and humiliation. After a long stint working in a mental institution, Gaby/Sister Luke is finally assigned to go to the Congo, where she works with cynical but brilliant atheist Dr. Fortunati. Sister Luke proves to be a very efficient nurse and assistant, and Dr. Fortunati miraculously heals her tuberculosis. Years later she is ordered to return to Belgium, and when her motherland is invaded by the Germans, she learns that her beloved father was murdered by the enemy while he was helping wounded members of the resistance. Dr. John Holden ventures to London to attend a paranormal psychology symposium with the intention to expose devil cult leader Julian Karswell. Holden is a skeptic and does not believe in Karswell's power. Nonetheless, he accepts an invitation to stay at Karswell's estate, along with Joanna Harrington, niece of Holden's confidant who was electrocuted in a bizarre automobile accident. Karswell secretly slips a parchment into Holden's papers that might possibly be a death curse. After diamond hunters kill two people while stealing explosives, Tarzan sets off after them. The group, led by a man named Slade, are off to excavate a diamond mine. Along the way, Tarzan rescue an attractive woman, Angie, whose crashes her small airplane. She finds the trek demanding but sticks with it proving her worth when the time comes. As for Slade and his group, greed and jealousy take hold leaving only a few of them for Tarzan to fight in the end.
