On the latest sailing of the SS Happy Wanderer on its regular round-trip Britain-western Mediterranean itinerary, Captain Wellington Crowther is dismayed to see five new faces among the crew, he having surrounded himself with a crew of men he knows and trusts in his ten year career. A smooth trip is more important for his career on this sailing than usual as the cruise line is making the decision for the person to captain the new ship doing the high prestige Transatlantic sailings, some in authority who will use any excuse not to assign him in he being just a regular bloke. Those five are: First Officer Leonard Marjoribanks, ship's doctor Arthur Binn, ship's head cook Wilfred Haines, head barman Sam Turner, who may be the most problematic in not knowing how to make the Captain's favorite custom cocktail, the Aberdeen Angus, and the Captain's personal steward, Tom Tree. The five know the Captain will be keeping a special eye on them and that he will paint them all in the same brush if one makes a mistake to jeopardize his promotion, on which they would like to accompany him if he gets it. But the harder they try, the more they get him into a scrape. These problems are only exacerbated by issues which they themselves are facing. Haines, never having sailed, gets seasick if he can't see the water, the galley which has no windows. And two passengers traveling together, friends Gladys Trimble and Florence Castle, are on a specific mission to find Flo a husband. While fickle Flo goes through a myriad a men who she deems as that husband material, she overlooks the one who is in love with her, namely Arthur, who is too shy to let her know how he feels.—Huggo

In the bar at the Lakeside Yacht Club a bitter, slightly drunk American novelist Mark Kendrick [Alex Nicol] confesses to an unseen listener that he could easily have kept quiet about events of the last six weeks but he wants Carol to hang.Six weeks earlier, Mark is writing his new book in a house beside Lake Windermere, England. The house across the lake from him hosts parties most nights and there is one in progress now. His phone rings and Carol [Hillary Brooke], the hostess from the house opposite, asks Mark if he could use his boat to transport some of her friends to the house. She meets them at the dock and invites Mark in. He observes her flirting with Vince [Paul Carpenter], one of the guests who is playing the piano. Mark returns to his boat but has no fuel, so borrows some from Carol's husband Beverly [Sidney James]. He invites Mark back to the house for a private drink. While they play billiards, Beverly talks about how he makes his wealth in the city and reveals that although he is in love with Carol, she only loves herself.They play until morning. Mark meets Beverly's daughter Andrea [Susan Stephen], then Carol and Vince return saying they have been watching the sunrise. The daughter does not like her step-mother Carol and is angry with her father for remarrying so leaves the room upset. As Mark leaves, Beverly invites him for another drink at the club a few days later.Back at his house, Mark sleeps off the effects of the party but is woken by a phone call from his agent Harry [Peter Illing]. Harry is disappointed with his lack of progress and puts the pressure on him to produce three chapters quickly. As Mark watches Carol swimming, he ponders getting closer to her.Mark attends Beverly's drinks party but on the way home afterwards they and Andrea see Carol and Vince kissing in a boat. They put the drunken Beverly to bed. As Mark goes to leave, Carol enters alone and offers him a drink. She thinks he does not like her but although he has fallen in love with her he leaves after one kiss in an attempt to pretend he is not interested.Harry rings again and insists Mark come to London immediately since the quality of his three chapters is so poor. On his way he calls in on Beverly who is being treated by a doctor [Gordon McLeod] who has given him only one year to live because of his excessive lifestyle of drinking and smoking. Beverly tells Mark he will alter his will to ensure Carol does not receive anything when he dies. Mark confronts Carol about her lack of love for Beverly but she is unmoved and says they have both got what they wanted from the marriage.In London, Harry tries to convince Mark's publishers all is fine but they opt out and Harry also says he is no longer interested in representing Mark.Mark returns to Windermere with no money and little prospects. He telephones to speak to Beverly about money but he is away with Andrea and only Carol is at the house. She invites Mark out for a drink where she tells Mark he has no hope of borrowing money from Beverly. As they leave they run into Frank [Hugh Dempster], one of Carol and Beverly's friends. Carol takes Mark home and they are soon embracing.Mark, Carol, and Andrea watch Beverly put his new boat through its paces on the lake when Frank arrives and indirectly reveals to Andrea that Mark and Carol are having an affair. Beverly's boat engine catches fire but he is unharmed. Carol admits she wished Beverly had not survived so in his anger Mark decides to pack up and leave, revealing to Carol that Beverly is cutting her out of his will and accusing her of plotting his death. He leaves but misses the last train to London. Beverly catches up with him at the station and convinces him to come back and go out on his boat on a farewell party.As they are about to leave on the boat, Carol arrives to join them. They go out drinking and fishing but later fog engulfs the boat reducing visibility to almost nothing. Beverly asks Mark to steer but in the fog he has to swerve suddenly to avoid a collision with a ferry, causing Beverly to fall over and he is knocked unconscious. While Mark goes to get the first aid kit, Carol pushes Beverly overboard and Mark has no hope of saving him in the fog.When they get back to the house, Mark cleans some traces of blood from the deck then rings the police to report it as an accident. After the police leave, Mark and Carol try to convince Andrea it was an accident but she does not seem to believe them.Mark is visited by Detective Inspector MacLennan [Alan Wheatley] and they both go to see Carol. MacLennan says a witness on the ferry claims to have seen Beverly fall but not overboard. However the body is found and the coroner returns a verdict of accidental death.MacLennan visits Mark again and reveals he has found traces of blood on the launch and he hears Carol has affairs with many men including Mark. Carol arrives as MacLennan leaves and they discuss what to do. Carol convinces Mark to go back to London while she sorts things out and then she will join him.After six weeks in London with no contact from Carol, Mark tries ringing but the line has been disconnected. He goes back to Windermere but the house is empty and partly boarded up. MacLennan appears and says she left three weeks ago. Outside in the MacLennan's car, Andrea tries to convince Mark to admit it was Carol who killed Beverly but Mark maintains it was an accident. They take him to the house where Carol is now living and he goes in to talk to her. She says she is now happy, but when he threatens her Vince appears and Mark learns Vince and Carol are now married. Carol used Mark and had no intention of joining him. Carol says there is nothing he can do about the murder but Mark says he is going to the police as he nothing left to lose even though he will be hanged as an accomplice. She desperately tries to stop him as he walks away but fails.Back in the Lakeside Yacht Club bar Mark finishes his confession with the listener, who turns out to be Detective Inspector MacLennan, and they leave together.

In 1950 a gang of three men are plotting the detailed arrangements to carry out a bank robbery. Their leader is George Brain. On the day of the big job, everything goes wrong. but after several mishaps the inept criminals get away with the money in a hearse. The police are alerted and follow the hearse, but by now two other funeral vehicles have joined the procession, and the three are being chased round a roundabout by a police car.The three robbers decide to abandon the hearse and run for it, chased by policemen. The leader, George Brain conceals a bag with the money in a hollow tree in open countryside. £50,000 has gone missing, say the newspapers. In court, the judge has no hesitation in sentencing them to fifteen years in prison.Fifteen years later they get out, and Gorge's girlfriend Myrtle is waiting for them. They go to her house, and she wants an amorous celebration, but George is intent on going to the tree to retrieve the money from the tree. But when they get there, a housing estate has been built over the area where the tree stood. The go into "Oldfield New Town" to see whether the tree is still standing.They get to Lovers Walk, where the tree was located, and looking over a high wall, they see that the tree is indeed still there. George decides that the thing to do is to get into the enclosed yard by saying that they are policemen investigating a robbery, but then they discover that the high wall is in fact the perimeter of a police station.Inside the police station, the sergeant is thinking about the police concert, while a young constable Harold, knows that the gang has just been released, and that the money was never recovered. He is speculating that the gang might be nearby looking for the money.
There is a house nearby with rooms to let, and Myrtle enquires, and takes two double rooms. She has designs on manipulating George into marrying her, and she tells him that the landlady will only let the rooms if they are a married couple. Very reluctantly George agrees, and we see them marrying in the registry office.They go to the house where they are going to stay, and are let in by the owner's daughter, who is a sultry girl, Sally. Seeing her, one of the men, Dipper Day, says that this must be his lucky day. The owner, Mildred Gameley, arrives and talks to them, and lets slip that she didn't know that George and Myrtle were married; Myrtle had lied to George, telling him that Mrs Gameley would insist on them being married.Suddenly Harold, the young police constable, bursts in to the dismay of the crooks. But he is just another lodger in the house. Now they are in their room, and Dipper arrives with a telescope that he has stolen from the park. It is the kind where you have to put 6d in a slot for a few minutes' use, but George is able to see the tree where the money is hidden. Dipper and George are looking through the telescope and see that a girl opposite is dressing in her bedroom, but there is a ladder against her window. She is eloping, but George sends them to get the ladder, to sue it to get into the police station yard. The man who is eloping has gone back up to the girl's room to leave a not for her Mother, and he is now marooned there, as George's men have taken the ladder. The three have climbed on to the police station wall and sat to rest, when the eloping girl comes and retrieves the ladder, without questioning why it had been placed there. The three are struggling on top of the wall when Harold, the policeman, comes out of the police station office and shouts at them. He pulls at the trouser legs of Booky and his trousers come off, but the three fall to the outside of the wall and run off.The next morning in the police station yard, a workman has come out and is investigating the hole in the tree where the money is. Myrtle comes in and is displeased because George hasn't been attentive to her. They go down to breakfast, except Booky who hasn't got any trousers. George mentions at breakfast that a rare bird is in the tree; there is considerable wordplay on "Great Bustard" and "Little Bustard". Harold says that the tree is to be cut down next week. Mrs Gameley the landlady takes a tray up to Booky, and he quickly, but with difficulty, conceals the telescope on the bed with him. Mrs Gameley evidently has romantic designs on Booky.George bursts in and she leaves, and Dipper arrives with a pair of trousers for Booky. He took them from an airing cupboard, and it turns out that they belong to Harold, the policeman.They decide to fire a harpoon at the tree, and one of them will slide down on the rope. They are setting up the harpoon gun the next evening and fire the harpoon, but they forgot to retain the end of the rope. A second attempt is more successful. But the zipwire trip doesn't work; Dipper just hits the wall. It is not clear how Dipper would have returned if he had been successful.Harold finds the harpoons the next morning but the station sergeant is more interested in the forthcoming concert, and expresses no interest in investigating the matter.The workmen arrive to cut the tree down, but when they go to their truck for their equipment, the robbers have taken it away, as they intend to use the tools themselves. The workman goes to report it to the station sergeant, who is sarcastically reluctant to be distracted from his musical preparation. He insists on going out to check the location from which it was stolen, but it has been replaced, but the tools are missing, leading to further sarcastic reluctance.George now decides that a tunnel is the means of getting inside the police station yard, but their bedrooms are on an upper floor. Booky is told by George to try to talk Mildred Gameley into letting the gang use her ground floor bedroom. She has marital designs on Booky, and refuses the swap without a proposal of marriage.George coerces Booky into marrying her, which he does with extreme reluctance. They take possession of her room and start the tunnel. Mildred Gamely and Myrtle are both disappointed brides, waiting alone in bed as their husbands concentrate on the tunnel; disposing of the spoil is a problem and they adopt a number of unlikely ruses to do so.Meanwhile at the police station Harold suddenly sees a police warning about the three robbers, during yet another rehearsal for the police concert. He rushes over to the house, and he realises they must be intending to get to the tree. Mildred's daughter shuts Harold in a bedroom, and Mildred tells Myrtle and her daughter that her deceased husband was a burglar; she is obviously on their side. She takes charge, and gets his tools and scales the wall and gets the money. At the same time the men have opened up the tunnel under the police choir, due to a miscalculation. The robbers escape back to the house as the policemen fall into the hole.The three women and the three robbers open up the briefcase, but the money had been destroyed by vermin, and is worthless. When Mildred hears that it was only £50,000 she is dismissive, and says that she has been planning a big train robbery that will net a million pounds. She will run the gang now, and this time the plan will work.

A low level thug named Johnny overhears their secret wedding night plans, and peddles the idea of robbing her of the $100,000 worth of diamond jewelry with which she will be adorned to two groups of his gangster acquaintances, who are in competition with each other. The robbery doesn't go quite according to plan, with Miss Blandish ultimately being kidnapped and held under the eye of Slim Grisson, the heir apparent as head of the violent Grisson gang, currently run by Ma Grisson. Kidnapping holds higher risk but possible greater reward as everyone figures they can get at least $1 million for her. Ma has no plans of letting her go, killing her after getting the money. But a surprise move by Slim, who has a secret past with Miss Blandish, turns the tables on the kidnapping and in turn Miss Blandish's emotional state. She ends up falling in love with him, and he with her. They know they can't live in either of their worlds, but even if they can escape together, will there be a future for them together always being on the run from both sides as well as the Grisson's competitors?—Huggo
