Rich old Cyrus West's relatives are waiting for him to die so they can inherit. But he stipulates that his will be read 20 years after his death. Alonzo is an armless knife thrower and gun shooter for a circus---or so he appears. He is actually a criminal with his arms intact. He and his accomplice, Cojo (a little person), are hiding from the police. Alonzo views his disguise as perfect, especially since it keeps from view an unusual deformity of his left hand that would immediately give him away as the criminal the police are searching for. Nanon, the daughter of Zanzi, the circus owner, is the target in his act. Although Alonzo is in love with her, Nanon's father despises him. Malabar, the circus strong man, is attracted to Nanon but she is repulsed by his uninhibited sexual advances and desire to touch and hold her. Her phobia extends to the touch of any man's hand. Alonzo feeds her fears in the hopes that Nanon will fall in love with him since he is "armless". Because Zanzi discovers Alonzo really has arms, Alonzo kills him, but Nanon witnesses the killing without seeing Alonzo's face; however, she does see the telltale deformity of his left hand. As Alonzo continues to plot to steal Nanon away from Malabar, Cojo makes him realize that she will hate him once she discovers he has arms---and the deformity showing that he is her father's murderer. Alonzo decides to have both his arms amputated, which he succeeds in doing through blackmailing a surgeon. While Alonzo is away recuperating from the surgery, Nanon gets over her fear of being touched and falls completely in love with Malabar. Discovering this upon his return, Alonzo hatches a scheme to kill Malabar as he attempts his latest, most dangerous stunt.—Patrick Robbins

The Boy graduates from high school with interscholastic honors, and as class orator he speaks on "Brains vs. Brawn," demeaning athletics, thereby winning the favor of the pedagogs but not that of the students. His college sweetheart requires that he become an athlete, so he spends his savings and tries out for all sports and is a perfect flop. He goes to work to pay his way through school, but every job adds to his blunders. His rival takes delight in maneuvering The Girl to his place of employment and further humiliating him. Then the college dean takes an interest in The Boy and insists that the varsity coach give him a chance; through coincidence, he thwarts a plot against him and wins a race. Learning that his rival has locked The Girl in the dormitory, The Boy goes to the rescue, performing all the athletic feats he dreamed about, and knocks the rival cold; thus the weakling becomes the college idol.

Before the first World War, two young girls, Jean and Kitty, befriend each other in a convent school near Paris for children of divorced parents. A boy, Ted, also a child of divorce, slips over the convent wall and meets them. Jean impresses him and he promises to marry her. Flash forward to 1920s America. Kitty is in love with Prince Ludovico (Vico) who is visiting with his uncle the Duke. Kitty's mother has determined that she marry someone wealthy, since she has a small income. The Duke has determined likewise for Vico. Jean, now a wealthy young woman, arrives from Europe. Ted arrives at the party and begins a serious courtship of Jean. He is independently wealthy, with a degree in engineering. Jean encourages him to work, and he sets up an office. One day Kitty and a bunch of friends show up there, intent on partying. They persuade Ted to join them. He wakes up the next morning, hungover, and finds that Kitty has snickered him into marriage. He just then receives a note from Jean that she is ready to marry him. He goes to her to explain his situation. Kitty shows up and Jean promises to send him back to her. She persuades him to go through with the marriage. Three years go by. Jean has been traveling and arrives in Paris. Kitty and Ted are there also, with their young daughter. Prince Vico and the Duke are there as well. Vico proposes to Jean; she tells him she plans never to marry. At a party the following night, Kitty tells Vico she is willing to let Ted divorce her, or even to become his mistress. Vico refuses on religious and moral grounds. Kitty sees her daughter with Jean and realizes how wrong their situation is. Soon she reads in the newspaper that Jean and Vico are planning to wed that afternoon. She composes a farewell letter to Jean and has a servant deliver it. The letter is delivered to Jean and she immediately leaves to see Kitty. Ted has pleaded with the doctor to save Kitty, but he offers no hope. The Duke shows the letter to Vico, who also runs to Ted and Kitty's apartment. Jean is there for Kitty's last moments. Vico arrives as the child comes in and is comforted by Jean.
