Fatty Arbuckle is a butcher boy working in a small town country store where they sell everything from frankfurters to fire escapes. He falls in love with the cashier, who is the daughter of the proprietor, and she, in return, has eyes for no one else. The careless clerk of the store resents the attentions being paid her by Fatty, and informs the old man. He keeps his "weather" eye on them both, and one day discovers Fatty sending her mental love messages, and forbids him to ever speak to her again. But Fatty is undaunted, and finds a way. Fatty also learns of the careless clerk's love for the girl, and when the latter objects to Fatty's love making they have a fight which ruins the store and ends in the old man sending the girl to a seminary. Fatty resolves to win the girl of his heart, and disguised as her cousin, gains admittance to the place, and, while having the time of his life, he is confronted with his hated rival, also dressed as a girl, who, with the village pest and another schemer, have decided to kidnap the daughter. "Luke" discovers the plot, and in his own particular way rounds the gang up, who are held at bay by the principal of the school while Fatty runs away with the girl to the nearest clergyman.—Moving Picture World synopsis

A rotund young man and his wife are spending the day at the beach at Coney Island. Feeling restless and wanting to go to the amusements at Luna Park, he ditches his wife. At the amusement park, he meets a pretty young woman. She arrived at the amusement park with one man and went in with another who had money to pay her entrance, before she ends up spending much of the day with the rotund husband, who managed to get the second man arrested. As the husband and the pretty young woman get into one misadventure after another, the first two men try to win back the affection of the pretty young woman, while the wife goes searching for her husband. The wife and the second man, who are old friends, team up in their quest, which leads to further misadventure for all five and the police.—Huggo

Charlie goes to a spa to dry out, but he takes a trunk of liquor with him. He tangles with another's gouty foot in a revolving door. Later he thinks the gouty man is making love signs to him (he doesn't Edna, the real object of the man's efforts), so he signs back. He interpets a massage to be a wrestling match. Charlie is an escaped convict, eluding his pursuers along the rocky sea coast. He dodges back and forth, and is driven into the sea, where he swims alongside a boat in which a bather is struggling to shed his sweater. Charlie steals his bathing suit and emerges, garbed as a bather, just as Edna's mamma is struggling in the water near the pier. "Big Eric," boastful of his strength, has been debating the advisability of attempting mother's rescue when Edna jumps in. Charlie saves them both and Eric pushes the rescuer back into the water. Charlie is rescued and taken to Edna's home, where he dons an oversized evening suit and takes part in social events. It develops that Edna's dad is the judge who sentenced Charlie, but he bluffs his way through this obstacle. Eric finds a newspaper announcing Charlie's escape and carrying his picture. Charlie fools the rest of the family by making whiskers on the picture but Eric calls the prison warden and Charlie is pursued from one part of the house to the other until he lands in the grasp of a big guard. Edna comes onto the scene as the guard grips Charlie's shoulder. The prisoner introduces the guard to the fair miss, and as his captor reaches to take the girl's hand, Charlie slips away.—Moving Picture World synopsis

When Charlie the Tramp wanders into a mission, he is smitten by Edna and puts back the collection box which he has taken. Reformed, he becomes a policeman and is assigned to rough-and-tumble Easy Street. Unable to trick or beat Eric the Tough, he puts Eric's head in a gas pipe and anesthetizes him. A hero, he now helps many poor people living on Easy Street. Eric escapes jail, Edna is kidnapped, but Charlie (recharged after sitting on a doper's needle) conquers all. "I am only a girl, not a fighter. But I would not wage war on women or old men," said Joan. Danny Morgan uncovered, stared at her with open admiration, then stuttered, "Neither will I. I'm with you." "Thunder" Flint, cattle king, had reached a cruel resolve, to drive the Nestors out of the country. To "Sweetwater" Sims, their leader, he sent warning, delivered by Danny to Joan, daughter of the Nestors. Flint sends the foreman to find "Cheyenne" Harry for "the work." Harry is found asleep in a saloon, where everyone is afraid of him as a "gunman." Harry agrees to meet Flint in Diablo. At their rendezvous near Diablo, Black-Eyed Pete and his gang are splitting the spoils of a marauding expedition. Harry meets two of the outlaws, who tell him they are cached up near the Big Rock. They seem to be friends. Danny and Ted, "Sweetwater" Sims' son, enter the saloon at Diablo together. There they come upon Harry, who, hearing that Ted is a Nestor, begins insulting him and shoots at both of them, but they escape. Flint does not place all of his trust in "Cheyenne" Harry, and sends for "Placer" Fremont, a gunman of unsavory reputation. Fremont and Harry meet at the saloon; each is suspicious of the other; each handles his gun while he drinks. Flint enters and sizes up the situation. Harry asks Flint if Fremont is another "killer" he has imported. Flint introduces Harry and Fremont, who merely extend a casual greeting. Flint is surprised and assures them that there is no cause for trouble, as they are both on the same job and there is plenty of work to be done. Ted and Danny ride to the cabin to tell Sims that Flint's "killers" have arrived and to prepare for trouble. Joan is greatly agitated. The next day Ted goes for a bucket of water and finds a sign warning the public that the spring is private property and that trespassers will be shot on sight. Fremont, hidden in a tree, raises his rifle and fires at Ted, who rolls down the bank, dead. Joan tells her father where Ted has gone; they rush to the spring and are grieving over the body of the boy when Harry rides by. The father tells Harry that he supposes he is one of the "killers," come to gloat over their "dirty work," but Harry insists that he did not know of their trouble, that he is a man and doesn't make war on children and old men. Harry tells Joan that if this is a sample of the work he was brought here for he's through, and from now on she can count on him whenever she needs him. Harry later informs the foreman that he's through with Flint and his outfit. When Flint hears that Harry cannot be depended upon, he sends Fremont to Diablo to "get" Harry. But Danny, hearing these instructions, warns Harry, who lays for Fremont, and in the act of being shot, kills Fremont. Flint and his gang start out that night. Danny has told Sims and Joan of the coming raid, and the girl rides out to warn all the Nestors, who ride from all directions to the cabin. Harry meets Joan and tells her that there are so many of the raiders that unless they get help they are lost. He rides to the camp of Black-Eyed Pete, where he asks for help. The outlaws rush to the battle, arriving in time to save the Nestors. The next day while Joan is caring for Danny's wounds, Sims asks Harry to remain at the cabin, but Harry declines, saying that there is something "just over yonder" which keeps calling to him. He tells Sims that he will let them know at sundown. Danny comes to him as he is thinking out his problem. Harry tells him to go back to the little girl. Joan is disappointed at first to see Danny instead of Cheyenne, who is left facing the setting sun alone.

Tom "Wolf" Lowry, the owner of the Bar Z ranch, tolerates no intruders into his life. When he hears that settlers have entered his valley, he goes to confront them but has a change of heart when he sees Mary Davis, a young woman who has come West to find her missing sweetheart, Owen Thorpe. Mary nurses Lowry back to health after he is wounded by Buck Fanning, the real estate agent who sold Mary her claim, when Lowry prevents Banning from raping Mary. Lowry soon falls in love with Mary and she agrees to become his wife, having lost all hope of finding her former sweetheart. By coincidence, Lowry finds Owen, but when Owen and Mary meet and plan to run away together, Lowry insists that she honor her agreement to wed him. On the day of the wedding, however, Lowry has a change of heart and takes Owen and Mary to the minister and tells him to marry the two lovers instead. Lowry then leaves Mary a note saying that he is going to Alaska. Five years later, Mary and Owen are the parents of a young son, named Tom, and the recipients of a letter from Lowry who now lives in isolation in Alaska.

Jimmy Carter, a millionaire, leading an idle, indulgent life, gets an urgent message from his friend, Reginald Travers. Travers, who is dying, has been ruined in the stock market by Mortimer Reynolds, and penniless, he leaves his little daughter in care of Carter, who promises faithfully to look after her. After the death of Travers, Carter takes Ruth to his luxurious home and gives her to the motherly care of Mrs. Jenkins, his housekeeper, Mortimer Reynolds, anxious to add Ruth to his list of unfortunates, instructs his mistress, Edna Morris, to make her acquaintance and to gain her confidence. Carter and Reynolds become bitter enemies because of Reynold's sarcastic reflections on the relationship between Carter and Ruth. As time passes, Ruth, by her winsomeness and innocence gradually changes Carter's mode of life. He no longer feels an interest in the gay life of former days, and even loses his taste for the morning nip. Unconsciously, Ruth is transforming his sympathetic dutiful interest in her to love. In a moment of ecstasy he crushes her in his arms. At the Charity Ball, where Ruth is taking part in a tableau, she meets Edna Morris. Fearful of Reynold's wrath should she fail, the unhappy girl works her way into the graces of Ruth. Carter sees this and immediately takes Ruth home, refusing to explain his conduct to her. Meeting Ruth in the park the following day, Edna denounces Carter for his action of the previous evening, "Why should he object to me, pray? Everybody knows that your father didn't leave you a penny, and that you are living on the, shall I say, generosity, of Mr. Carter." Stunned by the revelation that she is looked upon as Carter's mistress, the impetuous little girl rushes to the house, and in a burst of fury, screams her hatred of Carter. In the still of the night, she makes her way out of the house to Edna's apartment. It is here that Reynolds finds her. Impelled by a fiendish lust, he forces her to partake of his wines, and slowly they begin to work their effect. Carter, who, in desperation, has been searching for her, finds her in the apartment, stupefied and disheveled. Disgusted and heartsore, he looks upon her contemptuously and leaves, feeling that she has gone the way of Edna. Mrs. Morris, Edna's mother, prompted by a subconscious feeling that all is not well with her child, comes to the house from her little cottage in the country. She takes both penitents back home with her, hoping that they may forget and begin life anew. Meanwhile, Reynolds, whose financial affairs have taken a turn for the worse, and who is being sought by the police for forgery, attempts to make his escape. He is caught by the police and so made to pay for the misery and misfortune which he has brought upon others. Miserable and despairing because Carter has mistaken her, Ruth can find no peace. But Edna, she who has dragged her to darkness and degradation, succeeds in lifting her once more to the light of hope. The once impetuous Ruth is again folded in the arms of Carter, knowing that there only will she find eternal happiness and peace of soul.—Moving Picture World synopsis
