As a 20-year old former Olympian, Haywood sue the NBA for the right to turn pro without finishing college. The case went to the Supreme Court and in 1971, the Court's decided in favor of Haywood. Emi Ota and her friend Okiku stay briefly at a mountain inn and then return to Tokyo. Later, Nanmura, a soldier on leave, steps on an ornamental hairpin in the public bath at the inn. Emi writes to the inn saying she has lost a hairpin and, when she discovers that it injured Nanmura, returns to apologize. The longer term visitors at the inn meet together to discuss the hairpin incident. These include a grumpy Professor, a young couple Mr and Mrs Hiroyasu, and an old man staying with his two grandsons. Linda and the Mockingbirds is a road movie with music - a song-soaked, foot-stomping trip straight to the heart of what it means to be Mexican, and to be American, and the complex joy of being both at the same time.
Linda is Linda Ronstadt and The Mockingbirds are Los Cenzontles ("mockingbirds" in the Nahuatl language), a band and a music academy for young people in the San Francisco Bay Area. In this documentary by award-winning director and producer James Keach, we ride with Ronstadt, musician Jackson Browne, and a busload of Cenzontles from Arizona to the little town of Banámichi in Sonora, Mexico, where Ronstadt's grandfather was born.
On the way we learn of Ronstadt's long friendship with Eugene Rodriguez, a third- generation Mexican-American and musician who founded the Cenzontles 30 years ago to reconnect working-class kids with the dignity and beauty of their ancestral music and culture. It worked so well, and the Cenzontles became musicians of such skill and heart, that they drew admirers and collaborators like Ronstadt, Browne and Los Lobos.
The film explodes with rhythm - the pounding feet of zapateado dancers, the strumming of jarana and guitar, the clacking buzz of the quijada, a donkey jawbone. And it swells with soulful voices. It's a journey of pride and self-knowledge with a solid rootsy groove. (This is not Latin-ish "Dorito music," Ronstadt says. "This is Mexican music.")

When a young Cenzontle, Sarahi Velazquez, dedicates to Ronstadt a sorrowful song about a lonely orphan in a palm grove, a tune Ronstadt learned from her father, as Ronstadt softly sings along? When you meet the five dazzling Ortega sisters, so bursting with music that their proud dad, a carpenter, says he sometimes has to tell them to knock it off and go to sleep? When two Cenzontles singer- teachers, Fabiola Trujillo and Lucina Rodriguez, harmonize on Woody Guthrie's "Deportee," giving the old song a haunting dimension only immigrant voices can supply? Or when Rodriguez - beside the razor-wired border in Nogales - tells of crossing over as an undocumented girl of 10? Her perilous family journey inspired Browne and Rodriguez to write "The Dreamer," a song that asks: "A dónde van los sueños?" - "Where do the dreams go?"
As Linda and the Mockingbirds powerfully shows, they go to young people, who learn from their elders and add their own spirit and soul, bringing forth new flowers from ancient roots.

Ten years into a marriage, the wife is disappointed by the husband's lack of financial success, meaning she has to work and can't treat herself and the husband finds the wife slovenly and mean-spirited: she neither cooks not cleans particularly well and is generally disagreeable. In turn, he alternately ignores her and treats her as a servant. Neither is particularly happy, not helped by their unsatisfactory lodgers. The husband is easily seduced by an ex-colleague, a widow with a small child who needs some security, and considers leaving his wife. She fights back, writing to and visiting the mistress to demand she leaves her husband alone. He consults his friends, she her relatives. Around them, marriages are ending in fights and suicides but in this case, the mistress gives up the stressful fight, leaving the couple together again, no happier than before.

"How can frightened people change anything?" Claudine (1974) by Tina and Lester Pine is touted as a "heart and soul comedy" about a struggling, single mother of six feisty children, who takes a rare leap of faith to date a smooth and amorous garbage man. Claudine Price (Diahann Carroll) thinks she found herself a prince of a man in Rupert "Roop" Marshall (James Earl Jones)-a hardworking man who seems genuinely interested in her and her defensive kids. He's attentive, affectionate, and persistent with Claudine, and he slowly earns the trust, better behavior, and affection of the children. The romance is steady and strong, and Rupert proposes to a hopeful Claudine, despite his reluctance to deal with the irrational and unhelpful rules of the Social Service department. When Rupert gets a "willful neglect" notice along with a wage garnishment for child support, however, he goes into a rage, quits his job, and disappears from Claudine's life on the day the children throw him a Father's Day party. The disbelieving and despondent Claudine and the kids now struggle to adjust to Roop's absence, and Charles, the oldest of the six, goes out to confront a drunk Roop at a bar. Roop is hardly in any state to fight back, so he gives Charles a bear hug and shows up later that night, in front of their apartment building, to say goodbye to everyone. What happens, instead, is a heartwarming exchange where Roop complains that Claudine's family is too much for him to handle financially, and the kids reassure him that they won't be as unmanageable as he thinks. Roop and Claudine get married and galvanize their new family unit by banning together to protect the impassioned Charles from the police.
