Rimsky-Korsakov's The Golden Cockerel (Le Coq d'or) is based on a Pushkin folk tale, but the opera's Orientalism, comedy and sultry elements go far beyond its original influence. The composer saw in the story of a Tsar, punished for his cowardice and despotism, an opportunity to employ satire to condemn Russia's autocratic ruler, Nicholas II. This new production premiered in May 2021 and was staged by the Australian director, Barrie Kosky, a specialist in Russian opera. Critics hailed the 'glorious' singing of Dmitry Ulyanov and the 'exquisite' performance of Nina Minasyan calling the event 'a triumphant evening for all concerned' (Bachtrack.com). Daniele Rustioni has been principal conductor of Opéra National de Lyon since September 2017 and from the 2021-22 season has been principal guest conductor of the Munich Opera. His previous Naxos recordings featured the symphonies of Elisabetta Brusa. Of the stage direction, Bachtrack.com wrote that 'Barrie Kosky rises to the challenge with dark wit spiced with surreal burlesque.' It added that the role of Tsar Dodon was 'Gloriously sung by Dmitry Ulyanov' and wrote of Andrey Popov, in the role of the Astrologer: 'It's a stratospheric tenor role but Andrei Popov coped valiantly with its demands.' Nina Minasyan as Queen of Shemakha 'was the vocal star of the performance, negotiating the chromatic contours of the Queen's Hymn to the Sun with aplomb, her sensual singing nuanced with an exquisite pianissimo and secure top notes; with a voice like that, she could wrap any monarch round her little finger' (Bachtrack.com).

J.J. Ambercrumby and Nixon Zope, two not-so-bright smugglers of illegal medical supplies, encounter a mysterious buyer--David--who forces them at gunpoint to listen to his 'joke' about a miracle baby who heals her mother's heart, until they are interrupted by a military assault on the abandoned hospital in which they were conducting their black-market deal. J.J. and Nixon barely escape but then find they are hosts to 'Charlie,' an apparent runaway nine-year-old girl bearing strange tales of the 'Love Gods From Planet Zero' and insisting that J.J. and Nixon are the 'Love Gods' that must take care of her now that her father is gone. Not knowing what to do with the child, they take her to a strip club--'Shirley's Temple'--to 'chill and think.' They finally decide to take the girl home to Thundertail--J.J.'s sister--but when they arrive, the strong-arm of the pharmaceutical companies--Gordon Knight--has tracked them and eventually tortures and kills Thundertail. J.J., Nixon and Charlie stay overnight in a seedy motel and the next morning the two clueless bagmen nearly lose her to a pedophile residing at the motel. Next, the three head North to rendezvous with Shakey Jake, who prepares counterfeit documents to get them all out of the country, but while J.J. and Nixon are buying supplies at a local country store, Mr. Knight's henchmen capture them. Their only hope for escape is now in the hands of Shakey Jake and Charlie, the latter of which--at nine-years-old--is 'evolving exponentially' and will stop at nothing to save her two surrogate fathers.

It's days before Ro and Nick's wedding, the first time Ro will have seen her father, financial advisor Charles Teagarden, in some time, he who she's always idolized. His return brings up the issue of Ro's own future, as she saw her parents' marriage as perfect only to return home from college to discover their split, Aida who has rarely talked about it, and Charles to who she's never spoken about it, leading to the question of what chance she and Nick have as wife and husband. While in town, Charles, with Aida by his side, will catch up with who were his closest group of friends, his poker buddies, Dennis Shankel, Ted Cranford, and Bernard Poole, and where applicable their significant others. Aida gets sidetracked when human remains are found encased in the concrete of an industrial factory building owned by one of her clients. Ro, despite all to do with the wedding, gets swept along upon news that the victim was murdered. Arthur, leading the investigation and using the latest forensic technology which indicates among other things that the murder took place twenty-four years ago when the building was under construction, eventually identifies the victim as Sam Woods who was assumed at the time to have left town permanently in not liking Lawrenceton. Stories surface of Sam's connection to Charles and the others in the poker group, specifically Ted and Bernard, the latter who owned the crime site property when the factory was being constructed. While it affects their wedding, Ro and Nick place as much effort on the murder investigation as evidence points to one or a collective of the poker group, including Charles, as possibly having committed the murder.—Huggo
