Ambrose Wolfinger wants the afternoon off (his first in twenty-five years) to go to a wrestling match. He tells his boss that he must attend his mother-in-law's funeral. The afternoon is no joy. He tries to please a policeman, assist a chauffeur, chase a tire, and ends up getting hit by the body of a wrestler thrown from the ring. A series of mishaps leads his boss to send floral tributes to the house and notify the papers of the death (due to poisoned liquor). His shrewish wife, judgmental mother-in-law, and good-for-nothing brother-in-law add to his burdens. In the end he enjoys their fawning loyalty, a raise in pay, and his first vacation.—Ed Stephan

"I am only a girl, not a fighter. But I would not wage war on women or old men," said Joan. Danny Morgan uncovered, stared at her with open admiration, then stuttered, "Neither will I. I'm with you." "Thunder" Flint, cattle king, had reached a cruel resolve, to drive the Nestors out of the country. To "Sweetwater" Sims, their leader, he sent warning, delivered by Danny to Joan, daughter of the Nestors. Flint sends the foreman to find "Cheyenne" Harry for "the work." Harry is found asleep in a saloon, where everyone is afraid of him as a "gunman." Harry agrees to meet Flint in Diablo. At their rendezvous near Diablo, Black-Eyed Pete and his gang are splitting the spoils of a marauding expedition. Harry meets two of the outlaws, who tell him they are cached up near the Big Rock. They seem to be friends. Danny and Ted, "Sweetwater" Sims' son, enter the saloon at Diablo together. There they come upon Harry, who, hearing that Ted is a Nestor, begins insulting him and shoots at both of them, but they escape. Flint does not place all of his trust in "Cheyenne" Harry, and sends for "Placer" Fremont, a gunman of unsavory reputation. Fremont and Harry meet at the saloon; each is suspicious of the other; each handles his gun while he drinks. Flint enters and sizes up the situation. Harry asks Flint if Fremont is another "killer" he has imported. Flint introduces Harry and Fremont, who merely extend a casual greeting. Flint is surprised and assures them that there is no cause for trouble, as they are both on the same job and there is plenty of work to be done. Ted and Danny ride to the cabin to tell Sims that Flint's "killers" have arrived and to prepare for trouble. Joan is greatly agitated. The next day Ted goes for a bucket of water and finds a sign warning the public that the spring is private property and that trespassers will be shot on sight. Fremont, hidden in a tree, raises his rifle and fires at Ted, who rolls down the bank, dead. Joan tells her father where Ted has gone; they rush to the spring and are grieving over the body of the boy when Harry rides by. The father tells Harry that he supposes he is one of the "killers," come to gloat over their "dirty work," but Harry insists that he did not know of their trouble, that he is a man and doesn't make war on children and old men. Harry tells Joan that if this is a sample of the work he was brought here for he's through, and from now on she can count on him whenever she needs him. Harry later informs the foreman that he's through with Flint and his outfit. When Flint hears that Harry cannot be depended upon, he sends Fremont to Diablo to "get" Harry. But Danny, hearing these instructions, warns Harry, who lays for Fremont, and in the act of being shot, kills Fremont. Flint and his gang start out that night. Danny has told Sims and Joan of the coming raid, and the girl rides out to warn all the Nestors, who ride from all directions to the cabin. Harry meets Joan and tells her that there are so many of the raiders that unless they get help they are lost. He rides to the camp of Black-Eyed Pete, where he asks for help. The outlaws rush to the battle, arriving in time to save the Nestors. The next day while Joan is caring for Danny's wounds, Sims asks Harry to remain at the cabin, but Harry declines, saying that there is something "just over yonder" which keeps calling to him. He tells Sims that he will let them know at sundown. Danny comes to him as he is thinking out his problem. Harry tells him to go back to the little girl. Joan is disappointed at first to see Danny instead of Cheyenne, who is left facing the setting sun alone.

Paul Raden (Albert Dekker), the hopelessly insane son of Maxim Raden, hated owner of the Radentown mills, is in a straitjacket in a secret room in the family mansion while the body of his father is lowered into a grave. Twenty-five years earlier, the brutal father had hurled Paul against a wall when the young boy had tried to defend his mother, and with his brain injured forever, Paul's last memory before descending into the shadows of insanity, was his mother's agonized scream. At the graveside are Dr. Ben Saunders (Harry Carey), Paul's twin brother John (Albert Dekker) and John's wife Elaine (Frances Farmer). Pompey (Ernest Whitman), the family servant who has cared for and guarded Paul and kept the family secret for a quarter of a century, watches from afar. That night Dr. Saunders tells John that his twin, who he thought was dead, is alive as the father, refusing to commit him to an institution, had bribed the doctor to sign a false death certificate and bury another child's body as Paul. John and the doctor visit Radenhouse and find Pompey strangled and Paul gone. While they search frantically for him, he is enjoying his freedom and falling in love with the first girl he meets, Millie Pickens Susan Hayward), an unemployed mill worker. He wanders into a honky tonk filled with dancing jitterbugs, where pretty blonde Peggy Nolan (Jean Phillips) flirts with him; her body is found the next morning near the closed-down Raden Mills. Terrorized by the second murder and the thought that a homicidal maniac is on the loose, the town goes mad with fear and greed after Dr. Saunders tricks John into offering a $5,000 reward for the killer. Millie swipes her late father's revolver and persuades Paul, whose demented mind has forgotten the murders, to accompany her to Radenhouse, on her hunch that the murderer is hiding there.—Les Adams

Fritz Langs second collaboration with scenarist Thea von Harbou (later his wife) furthers her penchant for overloaded melodramatic claptrap (see: DAS WANDERNDE BILD/20), but also displays Langs rapidly-maturing visual mastery. (His next pics were DESTINY/21 and the astonishing leap of DR. MABUSE: THE GAMBLER/22.*) Here, the story elements, even with the familiar Harbou hysteria, have a Langian ring to them as late-blooming marital love is tested under rumors of past infidelity. It all has something or other to do with a mysterious engagement night that left her tied-and-bound in bed while a thief sped off in the night. But whats with those sleazy currency counterfeiters; the illegal diamond exchange that pilfers large rubies during luncheon trysts; a reappearing long-lost brother; or half of the cast spying on the other half? All the ingredients of a nightmarish Langian fever-dream, but minus the control needed to make sense of it. This long missing title barely survived, a single print was found in Brazil, with missing chunks of footage and its own Brazilian titles, now reverse-translated back into German & English. (Perhaps the original cut held together better.) In spite of its provenance, the elements prove quite watchable, a sharp image with minimal blasting balanced against emulsion scratches & the expected odd continuity jump. Hard as it is to crack as a conventional story, its intimations of future work, impressive production values and visual swing make it a must for Lang completists.
