Founded in Germany in 1999, Wirecard was a payment processor company that quickly rose to fame and popularity as the country's biggest business in modern times. The German ministers who appear in the film themselves admit how the country had been in a long search for any company that could represent the country in modern times. While IT companies like Google and Facebook were already established as businesses and brands, Germany still had old names like Siemens, Daimler, and BMW to show. It was, therefore, an ideal opportunity for all when Wirecard started to grow as the next financial technology alternative. The CEO, Markus Braun, carried himself in the utmost tech-firm fashion, dressing in a black turtleneck like Steve Jobs himself, and the overall situation of the market enabled Wirecard to become a staple name gradually. With an almost meteoric rise, the company overtook Deutsche Bank in total worth, with an overall figure of over 20 billion euros. Opening itself to the share market, Wirecard also succeeded massively in this space, and the German government too was immensely proud of its new FinTech giants.While all this was going great for the company, trouble started to brew when a reporter for the Financial Times in London named Dan McCrum looked into Wirecard's claims with an advanced level of scrutiny in 2014. The company claimed that a large share of the market it showed for itself was in Asia, and to McCrum, it seemed like the company was only acquiring more customers by buying smaller companies in Asia. This in itself seemed like a dubious practice for a company of this size, among other findings that suggested that it was basically a money-laundering operation. The journalist got in touch with Braun himself over a telephone interview, and the CEO denied any wrongdoing. Instead, he and Wirecard, for a very long time since then, kept making claims of their own that all this slander was being done by short sellers. His belief was that these individuals, who profit when a company loses value in the share market, wanted the same for Wirecard and were trying to think of their own profits. However, little was known then about the large-scale fiasco that the matter would soon snowball into.Other red flags concerning Wirecard also started to show up when a short seller was preparing an investigative piece on the company. After initial reports of the company allowing payments for illegal gambling in the US, it was found that all transactions in the US were facilitated by a company in the UK, and the mentioned address of this company happened to be just a small random house in the English countryside. The resident of this house claimed that a few individuals had offered him a monthly payment only for signing some papers and then posting some letters.
The 2nd report was prepared by short sellers called Zatarra, who met Dan and shared all of their information with Dan and convinced him that Wirecard was laundry money for criminals. The short sellers published their report.
After this second article had been prepared, Dan McCrum made mention of it and its contents in an online post, and this itself made Wirecard react through a letter sent by their lawyer to the Financial Times. They had made claims of their own that McCrum was working with short-sellers for his own financial gain. McCrum also felt that he was suddenly being followed around, and a person spying around the Financial Times office was also spotted.
Short sellers did not have a good reputation as they were seen as destroying jobs. The market didn't believe the Zatarra report, as the evidence was not found to be comprehensive enough.
One of the short sellers was even manhandled by goons sent by Wirecard.Despite all these small setbacks, Wirecard kept going strong, and they even released their prepaid cards to the American market. They even acquired Citibank's US pre-paid cards business. Pre-paid is great as there is no KYC required, and thus a very large amounts of money can be laundered effectively by means of pre-paid cards.
It was doing great business for the German stock exchange, and Wirecard was soon placed in the DAX index, which holds the 40 biggest companies in the German stock market. Despite this immense growth in numbers and popularity, though, there was always something off with Wirecard as allegations of hacking and information gathering had now started to make their rounds in certain parts of the world. Dan had a whistle-blower approach him from Singapore, who was the Head of Legal for Wirecard in Singapore.
The Head of Legal claimed that he unearthed solid evidence of large scale accounting fraud by the Finance team of Asia in Wirecard. He prepared a report and sent it to the head office in Germany. The COO Jan Marsalek was put in charge of the internal investigation and then nothing happened. Instead, the head of Legal was forced out. But he took copies of all his data, all 70 GBs worth of it. Dan published his article.The three major partners that it showed for itself in the Asian market all turned out to be false claims, as addresses of suburban houses and bus company shops were posed as banks working for Wirecard. Despite all these major findings, though, the German administration decided to side with Wirecard and actually made short-selling Wirecard stocks illegal. Along with it, journalists Dan McCrum and Stefania Palma, who had covered the case, were made the targets.
The company received good news with Softbank group investing $1 Bn in Wirecard after the FT report of fake Asian companies providing much of Wirecard's growth and almost all of its profits.Markus Braun and the rest of the market still did not seem to care much, though, and there was really not too much problem that the company faced until Jan Marsalek stirred up an entire fiasco. Jan Marsalek was the COO of Wirecard for as long as Markus Braun was involved with the company, but there was much more to Marsalek than just that identity. The man had strong connections with a number of high-profile individuals, and he also sometimes got directly involved with critics of the company. In one instance, he had flown into England to sit with a FT journalist to persuade him to stop writing against Wirecard and had even suggested that he had gone through the reporter's personal details and bank records.Some still believe that it was actually Marsalek who was conducting these spying operations on McCrum and the Financial Times, or at least, he was the one making it happen. At one point, Wirecard even hired a private detective to pose as an Arab investor who spoke to a short-seller and recorded their conversation about how he knew of the Financial Times' extensive report on Wirecard that was being prepared. The short seller was Nick Gold, and he knew Paul Murphy from the Financial Times. In one phone conversation, Paul said that he could not meet Nick as he was working on Wirecard. And that hint was enough for Nick to start short selling Wirecard, as he guessed that Paul was working on an article on Wirecard.The company then used this as evidence to make claims that the Financial Times was directly attacking it by all dirty means, which did force the news agency to hold on for some time and instead conduct an investigation to prove that they were doing nothing wrong. This, too, was believed to have been Marsalek's doing, for he was the only one with enough reach and influence to make it possible.
Among Marsalek's close friends and aides were an ex-Austrian secret service member, a former Libyan intelligence officer, and a Russian who was suspected to be a secret-service agent. In fact, the man had also had ties with powerful Austrian ministers in a different project earlier, in which he claimed to have helped restore peace in Libya. But instead, as it was later found out, the man was working indirectly with far-right ministers in European countries to make a deal out of the immigration and refugee crisis for political motives. Marsalek was the go between the Russian Government and the Right-wing parties in Europe, to help them win power by turning the migration issue into a political crisis. Marsalek planned to create a militia of 15,000 fighters in Libya to fight off waves of immigrants and help the Right wingers win power in Europe.After the Financial Times successfully came out to prove that they were not engaged in any wrongdoing, they were ready to make the next direct strike and bring Wirecard down once and for all. In a long piece of writing by Dan McCrum and others, it was revealed how Wirecard had basically been a money-laundering program for German gangs and rich individuals, and the names of companies it mentioned as partners did not really exist, or at least did not exist in the capacity that it was claimed. They were also apparently holding on to user data collected from cards and were regularly avoiding audits and regulations.
Although Braun maintained that the Financial Times was only tainting the company's image, an external audit was started by KPMG, and this ultimately led to its downfall. The auditors found a whopping 1.9 billion euros missing from records, as the two banks in the Philippines that Wirecard claimed to have stored the money in, responded that they had no business relations whatsoever with Wirecard. All documents related to this money were fake and forged, and Wirecard could not be saved any longer. Within a very short time, share prices dropped from 104.50 euros to 1.28 euros.Despite his role as the CEO, some believed Markus Braun to have only been a pawn in the hands of Jan Marsalek, at least for some time before the fraud was committed. Braun himself also claimed the same, saying that he and his team had been duped into committing financial crimes without any idea of it. While Markus Braun was arrested shortly after he resigned from Wirecard, Jan Marsalek was nowhere to be found and had paved an escape for himself using his secret-service influence, and the entire story of Wirecard's scandal might never have been understood without Marsalek's account. Dan McCrum was awarded the highest prize for investigative journalism in Germany, and the documentary film has also been adapted from his book on the matter.

Gypsy is a middle-aged woman living all by herself, aspiring to get her book published, which is in the works. Her main profession is that of a burlesque dancer, but she wants to shift away from it, mostly because of her aging body and because she finds her passion in writing. Her neighbor's young boy, Sam, and his pet dog, Moses, are friendly with the woman, and it is with the boy that trouble begins. One day, while Gypsy is at work, she is called up by his neighbor, Ralph, who desperately asks for her help. Ralph had stolen a large sum of money from a local criminal, Jack, and the gangster had now sent men after him to kill him and his family. Jack and Gypsy, however, have a history together, as Ralph claims she is the only person Jack would listen to. As a panicky Ralph tries to drive away from danger with his wife and mother in the car, he calls up his son, instructing him to quickly come down to a certain spot along with his iPad, for all the necessary codes and information are stored on that device. Sam reaches the designated place on time, along with his dog, but his family is shot dead almost right in front of his eyes.Meanwhile, guessing that something terrible has happened, Gypsy drives back home and finds a weeping Sam hiding in her bathroom. Although not very keen on having to disrupt her own life to essentially babysit a kid and a dog, Gypsy cannot help but provide assistance to the boy, for she knows that he would be killed if Jack gets his hands on him. Quickly packing her bags, she takes Sam and Moses on her semi-truck and drives away from their neighborhood and town, to get as far as possible from her ruthless ex-lover.Gypsy's plan is to escort Sam to his uncle's place, who is a rabbi at a synagogue in a city some distance away. But the uncle does not seem to have been very connected with his brother, and although he agrees to take the child in, he asks for some time to prepare for such a sudden change in his life. Gypsy aggressively claims that the boy, too, did not get any time to prepare for such a massive change of fate and decides to hand the boy off at his uncle's place no matter what. On the way, she stops at a hotel and puts up with the boy there, and realizes that the boy is too chatty and attention-seeking for her solitary life. But she also realizes why Sam craves such love and affection, as he is, after all, a kid who has lost everyone he knew in life all of a sudden. His only companions now are his dog and his neighbor, who has been taking him away from trouble. He realizes what the trouble is, though, as Sam is an extremely intelligent and sharp kid who keeps mining and investing in cryptocurrency. But in his childhood arrogance, he often refuses to cooperate with Gypsy until apologizing and trying to get back to her good terms only a little while later.On the other hand, Gypsy has to constantly look out for the boy's and her own safety, as Jack's men have already been following her and even questioned her about her neighbor's boy, to which she lied. After some time, she realizes that it is best to use her old charms on Jack, and she visits him at his residence, claiming to hand over her neighbor's dog to him. Jack admits that she has always been the love of his life, despite having cheated on her multiple times while being together, and that he is still interested in her. Gypsy, however, knows better, and she denies any commitment to him and manages to bring the dog back alive. Despite trying to convince Jack to let the boy alone, though, she finds out that her ex-boyfriend has placed a tracker on her car, suspecting that she has the boy with her.They somehow manage to evade the gang men at the hotel's parking lot and then throw away the tracker on a different car, duping the men in the wrong direction. Gypsy then casually breaks into an unlocked car and steals it, only to put the men off her track. Sure enough, the men track her semi-truck down with the help of their police friends, and momentarily lose track of them. However, Gypsy and Sam shockingly realize that they are also accompanied by another woman who had been sleeping inside the car and claims it to be her own. Gypsy persuades this woman, Tasmin, to help them and drop them off at their location, and they continue to journey together. They gradually bond with Tasmin too, and take another stop, but have to rush out again as Gypsy realizes Jack has set off the police after her, claiming that Sam is a missing child. Tasmin helps them out of this situation in return for some money that Gypsy promises to give her once they get to their destination. That night, they reach Cascade, Montana, where Gypsy's close friend Lacey prepares a safe space for them. Leaving the boy and the dog back, Gypsy takes Tasmin to the local graveyard, where she digs up an empty grave, which actually contains a bag full of money that Jack had saved up for her when they were together. However, Jack also remembers this spot and confronts them here, making Tasmin flee the scene. Gypsy manages to survive the night by hiding inside a concrete casket, and Lacey gives Sam and Moses company on the other side. The next morning, they meet up at a predetermined spot, and Gypsy and Sam now drive forward towards Sam's uncle, leaving Moses behind with Lacey.Along with the progressing plot, "9 Bullets" tries to build up the gradual relationship of friendliness and possible kinship between solitary Gypsy and young Sam. The woman, who is often irritated by the boy's actions and her decision to keep him tagging along, also finds company in the boy. The boy seems mentally more mature than his physical age, and despite his childly perceptions, he realizes that nobody really wants him and that Gypsy is the only one who cares about him even a small bit. Gradually, Gypsy opens up to him about her own past-she had been forced upon by a college professor, the result of which was a son that she decided to keep and raise as her own. But the child soon died tragically in a car accident, for which Gypsy still holds herself responsible, and she admits that she is not good around children because they remind her of her own child and her failure. Though such emotions are brought in, they remain restricted only to the point of being stated rather than being felt. The film overall lacks the chemistry and emotiveness that were required to make it convincing.Jack and his men track down Tasmin to interrogate her about Gypsy's location, and she fearfully tells them of Lacey's house. One of the men possibly spares Tasmin's life, as she weeps that she has been returning home to her estranged mother, and then they go over to Lacey's. They are not accompanied by Jack, though, who is seen returning to his current lover, Lisa, a young, influential woman who wants Jack to get into politics. Lacey has a very aggressive reaction to the men, as she was prepared for such a visit, and shoots dead one of the men with her lethal shotgun. On the other hand, Gypsy advises Sam to return to Jack all the money that his father had stolen, for there is no end to running away from crime. She calls up Jack, asking him again to spare the child once he returns the money, and Sam does so shortly after. He and Gypsy then reach the rabbi's synagogue, where they enter and listen to a sermon about repentance. This convinces Gypsy to not leave the child behind and instead take him along with her and keep him as a part of her life.As the two happily exit the building, though, they are tracked down by two of Jack's men, who have been promised even more money to kill Gypsy by Lisa. They manage to shoot Gypsy down, with the final shot fired by Lisa herself, who kills the woman out of jealousy. But Gypsy manages to shoot the two men dead before dying, and keeps Sam out of trouble as Lisa has no intention of killing him. The boy is shocked by the whole scene and desperately cries for help. Despite having been shot five times from point-blank range, Gypsy wakes up in the hospital a few weeks later, perhaps out of her sheer insistence from the very beginning that it would take nine bullets to kill her, as she is like a cat with nine lives. Sam joyfully welcomes her back to consciousness, and he has even identified himself as the woman's son to the doctors. Sam also reveals that he had placed a virus in the code while sending the money over to Jack, which made Jack unknowingly donate all the money to the Save the Children foundation. Sam has also managed to cleverly save three million dollars for themselves, with some of which Gypsy buys a new car after she gets healthy, and the two drive into the distance at the end of the film. They are aware, as they earlier discussed casually, that they would still have to run some more from Jack, but are willing to do it together as they have now found comfort in each other's company. In Los Angeles, Layla picks up her kids from Wyatt. Troy and Beaver arrive and Wyatt takes them through what is essentially a playground to the lab. Troy shows Wyatt money and says he didn't do as well as Wyatt wanted and Wyatt tells him he has to do better. Beaver says he wants to join the operation but Wyatt doesn't seem to want him to and threatens him if he reveals anything.In a high school English class Mrs. Flynn asks the students if they read the book. To make sure they did, she gives a pop quiz. Beaver walks in late. He tries to copy off Flip. Meredith, whose hair is a mix of pink and blonde, is wearing as little as a student could get away with. She is willing to let Beaver cheat. Later, Beaver tries to ask her out and Meredith turns him down. Beaver invites her to a place where a bunch of kids hang out, and Meredith is willing to go to that.Beaver joins Flip and Troy and they go to the hangout. The kids are doing drugs and otherwise misbehaving. Meredith arrives and joins the others. She says her name is Kat Carter and she moved from Florida. She is unwilling to try strange drugs, claiming her mother is very strict. Later, she and Beaver go off by themselves and do drugs.Meredith joins Gina and Rhonda and they do drugs, but Meredith once again refuses to do anything too strange because of her mother. This bothers Gina. Meredith later spends more time with the girls.On several occasions Meredith studies the social media of her new friends. Her online name is Katherine Carter.Meredith is awakened by a phone call from Jimmy. She is late picking up her son Nathan. When Meredith arrives at Jimmy's house and picks up her son, Nathan isn't very enthusiastic. Jimmy says he wishes Meredith would take her son more of the time, but Meredith explains that her job keeps her very busy, and she is in deep right now. Jimmy says it's okay because Sharon is willing to help take care of Nathan.When Meredith meets with Ellen, her superior, in a restaurant, she is told solid evidence is needed. Meredith says she is going to try but it's hard to get what is required. First, she has to find out who the "cook" is. At one point Meredith meets Nathan on the street where he accuses her of being the "thumper", while he is the dog.Meredith goes to Beaver's house and searches through drawers for evidence but is almost caught when Troy has to come back for his phone.The next time Meredith gets together with the others to do drugs, they are busted by the police. Or are they? It turns out to be Wyatt playing a prank.Meredith meets again with Ellen with more evidence, but not enough.Wyatt goes to a pharmacy trying to get the drugs he needs for anxiety. He is told insurance won't cover his drugs any more, and this makes him angry because he says he can't afford the drugs if he has to pay. He reminds the pharmacist and her supervisor he served in Iraq, and he shouldn't be treated this way. Outside, Gina needs drugs.It is Nathan's birthday and Meredith shows up for a party nicely dressed with a present. But when Nathan is upset about something, it is Sharon who comforts him and he calls her "Mommy". Jimmy says Sharon has moved in and they are engaged. Meredith leaves crying.On a visit to Beaver's house, Meredith sees Beaver was beaten up. Beaver suggests it was his father, who has been gone a while but will be back soon, leaving him to take care of his developmentally disabled brother Jeff. Beaver says he wants to leave and take Jeff to Oregon.Meredith goes to Wyatt's house. After Layla leaves with the kids, Meredith goes through his trash, which makes him angry. She pretends to desperately need a fix and Wyatt gets her what she needs, but he insists that she give herself a shot in front of him. She protests that all she ever did was smoke, but Wyatt is persistent. Meredith drives to Beaver's place but is having a lot of trouble. Beaver sees she is very sick and takes her to the hospital.Ellen comes to visit Meredith and says she didn't necessarily do anything wrong, but she's being taken off the case. Furthermore, there is enough evidence to arrest Wyatt's associates. Meredith protests but it doesn't help. Her father visits her. Gina comes to visit "Kat" but is told there is no one named Kat or Katherine Carter. So Gina goes in search of her friend. She sees cops including Ellen.In one scene Troy and Beaver are playing a video game and Troy's younger brother wants to play. He goes to his mother who is passed out and claims she said he could.Meredith goes home with her father but after time passes she is recovered enough to go to Beaver's house. Meredith carries a gun just in case. Wyatt shows up and apologizes for giving her a bad batch. Before Meredith can warn Beaver, Gina tells Wyatt who Meredith really is. Meredith gets to Beaver and tells him to take Jeff and leave. Beaver asks where he should go and Meredith says anywhere. Then Wyatt finds Meredith and starts angrily questioning her. First she denies who she is, then Wyatt puts Meredith in a bathtub and starts running water in her face. She finally confesses. Wyatt has her gun and gives it to Troy, who protests because they will be in serious trouble if they kill her. Finally, Troy shoots Wyatt in the head.Back at the precinct, Meredith says she doesn't want to do the job any more.Meredith makes breakfast for Nathan, who doesn't like it. But at least Meredith has her priorities correct, and she returns Nathan to Jimmy, who is very happy to see him.
