The TV movie "Purgatory" is a Western-fantasy film that explores themes of redemption, forgiveness, and the consequences of one's actions. It tells the story of a group of outlaws who find themselves in a mysterious town called Refuge, where time seems to stand still, and they must confront their past sins and face the possibility of either finding redemption or eternal damnation. The movie begins with a violent shootout between the outlaws and a group of lawmen. As the outlaws flee, they stumble upon the town of Refuge, which appears to be a peaceful and idyllic place. However, they soon discover that something is amiss when they notice that the town's residents are all from different time periods and seem to be trapped in a cycle of eternal purgatory. The leader of the outlaws, Blackjack Britton, played by Eric Roberts, is a cold-blooded killer who has spent his life committing heinous crimes. Upon arriving in Refuge, he meets a mysterious preacher named Brother Joseph, played by Sam Shepard, who seems to have supernatural powers and claims to be the gatekeeper of the afterlife. As the outlaws spend time in Refuge, they are forced to confront their past actions and the consequences they have on their souls. Each character goes through a personal journey of self-discovery and redemption. They are confronted with their victims and given a chance to repent for their sins. Throughout the film, the outlaws interact with the town's residents, who act as mirrors reflecting their past actions. They encounter a young girl, Amelia, who represents innocence and serves as a reminder of the lives they have destroyed. The outlaws also face off against a group of demonic horsemen, led by a character named Wild Bill Hickok, played by Peter Stormare, who symbolize their own inner demons and the darkness they carry within. As the outlaws navigate their way through the enigmatic town, they must make choices that will determine their ultimate fate. Some characters, like Blackjack Britton, struggle with the idea of redemption and cling to their violent ways, while others, like the outlaw Doc Woods, played by Donnie Wahlberg, seek forgiveness and strive to change their path. The climax of the film occurs when the outlaws are confronted by the demonic horsemen and must engage in a final battle between good and evil. It is during this confrontation that their true nature and the choices they have made are revealed. In the end, "Purgatory" explores the concept of redemption and the power of forgiveness. Michael Jai White and Luke Goss are in "The Hard Way," an extremely predictable movie that just never gets the viewer engaged in the story. The White Character "Payne" learns his brother died on a mission in Romania, just when he his brother was expected to come home and be introduced to his young nephew who works at Payne's Bar in New York. Payne a former and very capable soldier teams up with allies Goss who plays "Mason" to hunt down the killer and get revenge in Romania.Luke Goss, Michael Jai White and Randy Couture star in this lack luster and seemingly long, very boring and never hitting home under the coot ledge of director, Keoni Waxman, movie. Three capable actors directed in this sleepy disorganized manner that never showcases these awesome actors talents and capabilities. The Hard Way is not a spectacular movie in anyway and never enough action to keep fans entertained throughout.Interesting elements abound, like the classic 1967 fast back Mustang Mason Drives slowly whenever shown, the Sniper Rifle and interesting handguns like the white handled presumably Ivory handled 1911 .45 pistol of Couture character Toro/ Briggs uses. The on-scene location / sets are also interesting and very elaborate.Michael Jai White is at his best with his fight scenes as in real life he is black belt in 7 styles of Martial Arts and it shows. Having trained with Segal and Van Damn in the past White does not disappoint in his fighting scenes abilities. The director used poor fight choreographers for all the action scenes and show poorly, fight scenes are good, not great. Gratuitous violence abound as well. The scene where he takes on two mob type assailants who want to take over his New York bar is with disappointment and is touted as the highlight of the entire movie. This scene makes no sense actually and is leaving the viewer scratching their head and wondering, "huh?" The climactic fight scene is also foolish as well. Here Couture shoots blanks from his Ivory Handled 1911 .45 three instances and each time Payne gets up off the ground and then they have their final physical hand to hand combat. Simultaneously in another part of this location a knife fight between Goss one of Toro's last surviving bad guys is too long and foolish. Predictably Goss and White characters triumph with no injuries.Plot Synopsis is a sad feature film that drags on and on with no solid story and little entertainment from start to finish. Many small old type plots with almost good newer longer plots which are miss matched and poorly organized. There are attempts to show character definition but never reaches that goal.The actors shown here in this Netflix movie are good group, but the sleepy director just never delivers. Story is weak. The characterizations are long and unsubstantial with overall poor outcome. No car chase, no love interest that makes sense, the bad guy evil depiction/s wherever shown are laughable. Especially the pliers and tooth extraction routine.The viewer just doesn't "feel it." Overall, The Hard Way is not worth watching and there will be disappointment to those that do. The plot synopsis is one action adventure movie that missed the mark despite the good actors and great location. - Martin Snytsheuvel

On October 6, 1970 while boarding an international flight out of Istanbul Airport, American Billy Hayes (Brad Davis) is caught attempting to smuggle two kilos of hashish out of the country, the drugs strapped to his body. Billy's troubles really begin when after that assistance, he makes a run for it and is recaptured. He is initially sentenced to just over four years for possession, with no time for the more harsh crime of smuggling. The prison environment is inhospitable in every sense, with a sadistic prison guard named Hamidou (Paul L. Smith) ruling the prison, he who relishes the mental and physical torture he inflicts on the prisoners for whatever reason. Told to trust no one, Billy does befriend a few of the other inmates, namely fellow American Jimmy Booth (Randy Quaid) (in for stealing two candlesticks from a mosque), a Swede named Erich (Norbert Weisser), and one of the senior prisoners having already served seven years, an Englishman named Max (Sir John Hurt), the latter two also in for hashish-related charges. One prisoner not befriended is Rifki (Paolo Bonacelli), who wields power in the prison as the unofficial eyes and ears for the guards. As Billy, his family and his girlfriend Susan (Irene Miracle) attempt through legal and diplomatic channels for Billy's release, Max tells him that the only way out is to "catch the midnight express" (escape), which is what Jimmy is continually trying to do. When Billy's situation changes, he becomes more desperate in every sense of the word. Set in the midwest of the depression-era, Paper Moon follows Moses Pray and Addie Loggins - one a con artist, the other, the young girl who's the daughter of a woman who's just passed away. The pair meet when 'Mose' stops by the sparsely-attended funeral in Kansas of a woman he once knew (we never see her). In attendance, is the woman's young daughter, Addie, whom Moses agrees to transport to St Joseph, Mo -- for money, of course. Mose - an inveterate hustler, has been working ostensibly as a representative of the Kansas Bible Company - who picks his marks from the obits, and tries to sell - at exorbitant prices - the decedents' spouse the custom bible they'd previously ordered. Wise beyond her years, Addie picks up on Moses' grift, and very quickly, she and Mose become a team. Traveling from town to town, making money in every dishonest way imaginable, and looking for the ultimate score. The colorful characters they meet along the way make the film all the more interesting. One in particular - Miss Trixie Delight - an exotic dancer who Mose rescues from a traveling carnival and the girl who works for her, poor, suffering Imogene. Addie sees Miss Delight as a potential rival, and she concocts a plan with Imogene to free themselves of her. The film's peppered with regional dialogue, one of the most memorable line's uttered when Mose is forced to wrestle a backwoodsman in order to trade his new car for the hillbilly's battered old truck; "make him say calf-rope, Leroy!" one of the observers calls out.
