Someone has broken into the safe of a London company, and yet no force or explosive was used, and the keys do not appear to have been lost. A police superintendent is investigating, assisted by a new and very keen sergeant. The superintendent's wife is worried that he may be in personal danger, and the superintendent is not always mindful of the need to reassure his wife. Then a safe in another business is also robbed without the use of force, but the robber's getaway car runs down a bystander, who later dies. There seems to be nothing to link the crimes, but then the getaway car is found abandoned in a scrap yard. While attending a medical conference in Paris, an American physician, Dr. Ben McKenna, along with his wife, retired musical theater actress and singer Jo McKenna née Conway, and their adolescent son, Hank McKenna, decide to take a side trip to Marrakesh, French Morocco. On the bus to Marrakesh, they meet a Frenchman, Louis Bernard. The following day at the market, Louis is masquerading as an Arab and approaches Ben with a knife plunged in his back. Before dying, Louis cryptically whispers into Ben's ear that there will be an attempted assassination in London of a statesman. Ben is reluctant to provide any information of this news to the authorities because he learned Hank was kidnapped by a British couple, Edward and Lucy Drayton. The people the Draytons were working for threatened to kill Hank if Ben divulged any information told to him by Louis Bernard. With what little information they have on hand, Ben and Jo head to London to try and thwart the assassination attempt and more importantly find Hank alive and safe. Scotland Yard is aware of some pieces to the puzzle, including the fact that Louis Bernard was a French secret service agent and that there will be an assassination attempt on someone. They will have to work together as they hit a diplomatic roadblock, one that may be overcome with a special Jo Conway song.—Huggo

At a fashionable dinner party in Hong Kong, a Naval officer is coaxed into revealing details of a dream in which eight people take off from Bangkok, Thailand in a Dakota bound for Tokyo, Japan and crash in the Japanese mountains. Amongst those listening is Air Marshal Hardie (Sir Michael Redgrave), who is due to fly to Tokyo the next day. Hardie initially dismisses the dream because he is scheduled to fly out in a Liberator, but as Hardie arrives at the airport, he discovers that the Liberator has developed mechanical problems and has been replaced by a Dakota. A frightened woman is running barefoot on a highway, trying desperately to flag a car. Private Investigator Mike Hammer is at the wheel, and after almost hitting the woman, he tells her to get in. The woman's name is Christina Bailey. She is obviously on the run, being barefoot and wearing nothing but a trench coat, and the scent of fear. Whoever was after her eventually catches up with them. Christina has information they want, but dies while being questioned. The killers fake an accident by pushing Hammer's car off the road, but he survives, waking up in hospital three days later. As Mike starts to investigate Christina's death, he's told by the police to stay out of it, but the hard-nosed private investigator proceeds anyway. Captain Wiles also secretly sees a young single mother, Jennifer Rogers, who is the one person who does seem to know Harry and seems happy that he's dead. Later, another person who stumbles across both Harry and Captain Wiles is struggling artist Sam Marlowe, to whom Captain Wiles tells the entire story of what he has seen thus far. Over the course of the day, several revelations come to light that question if Captain Wiles actually killed Harry. Sam, Mrs. Rogers, Captain Wiles and Miss Gravely's individual and collective actions in the matter of Harry take into account friendship, self-preservation, the path of least resistance, love and a lot of realizations about what their past actions will mean. Their work may all be for naught if Deputy Sheriff Calvin Wiggs, the closest thing to law enforcement in their town, finds out about Harry.—Huggo

Jorge Rattery has just been murdered, he dying in his home in front of many of his family and associates. The suspected method of murder was the poisoning of his medication, the bottle of which had gone missing right after he died before Inspector Blount with the police arrived. Almost everyone close to Jorge in the house at the time could have killed him. Jorge's sister-in-law, actress Linda Lawson, admits that she hated him and wanted to kill him, even though she states she didn't. Jorge's wife, Violeta Rattery, and her preteen son from her first marriage, Ronnie Hershey, also would probably admit that they hated him but had never thought about killing him. The Carpaxes - Jorge's business partner and his wife, Rhoda - state they would have had no reason to kill him in liking him, although they are accused of hating him as much as anyone. And Jorge's mother, the only person who seems to be grieving, blames anyone and everyone in they not being devoted to him like her. But the unusual person involved is successful murder mystery novelist Felix Lane who was at the house as Linda's guest. He ended up telephoning lawyer Nigel Strangeways to engage his services in this matter as he would have been at the top of the suspect list as he had written in the diary he kept with him his intention to murder Jorge, that is until Jorge got his hands on the diary and had it forwarded to his own lawyers after which he banished Felix from the property. His intention to murder Jorge was all in an act of revenge, the plot which he could carry out under that pen name of Felix Lane, and not his "real" identity of widowed scientist Frank Carter which is associated to what Jorge did to him. What plays out in flashback is that plan by Felix and how it is connected to Jorge's actual murder.—Huggo
